Kharkhorin - The tour begins when the guide and driver meet the traveler at the designated hotel or airport. The journey heads towards Karakorum, the historic capital of the Great Mongolian Empire from the 13th century. Today, its ruins stand as a testament to time, concealing the secrets of Chinggis Khan beneath its “black soil” name. A visit to the Kharkhorin Museum reveals artifacts unearthed from these ancient ruins. The next stop is the magnificent Erdene Zuu, the oldest monastery in Mongolia, showcasing the artistry of Mongol architects.
Erdene Zuu Monastery - The exploration continues at Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest existing Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, founded in 1586. Following the destruction of Karakorum by Ming dynasty forces in 1388, the monastery was constructed using materials from the ruined city, preserving a piece of the ancient capital’s heritage.
The tour then proceeds to the Kharkhorum Museum, which offers a thorough exploration of the region’s rich history, with a particular focus on the Mongol Empire and the ancient capital of Karakorum. Established in 2011 with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Japanese government, the museum houses over 3,000 artifacts from the Upper Paleolithic period to the 14th century.
