Crab Fishing and Eagle Encounters: A Ketchikan Adventure
As a thrill-seeker and fan of “Deadliest Catch,” I couldn’t resist the call of the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour in Ketchikan. The allure of the Aleutian Ballad and the promise of adventure beckoned, and I was eager to experience the rugged life of Alaskan fishermen firsthand.
Setting Sail on the Aleutian Ballad
The morning in Ketchikan was drizzly, but that only added to the mystique of the adventure that lay ahead. As a fan of the adrenaline-pumping show “Deadliest Catch,” I couldn’t resist the allure of the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour. The Aleutian Ballad, a vessel that has braved the treacherous Bering Sea, was waiting to take us on a journey through the calm waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage.
Travis, with a smile as wide as the horizon, greeted us near the Holland America’s ms Statendam. His enthusiasm was infectious, and I found myself practically skipping towards the dock. The Aleutian Ballad was a sight to behold, a sturdy ship with a storied past, ready to share its secrets with us. As we boarded, the crew’s warmth and hospitality were immediately apparent, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience.
The Thrill of the Catch
Once aboard, the Aleutian Ballad set off towards Annette Bay, and the adventure truly began. The crew demonstrated the art of crab fishing, pulling up various styles of crab pots with a practiced ease that spoke of years spent battling the elements. I had the chance to hold a stone crab and a snow crab, their hard shells a testament to the rugged life beneath the waves.
The skies remained overcast, with intermittent drizzle, but the amphitheater seating was covered and heated, ensuring our comfort. The crew provided warm raincoats for those who needed them, and hot cocoa and coffee were available to keep us warm. As we watched the crew work, I couldn’t help but admire their skill and dedication. It was a reminder of the resilience required to thrive in such a demanding environment.
Eagles and Echoes of the Wild
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the encounter with the majestic bald eagles. As we approached a feeding area, over 30 eagles swooped down, their wings cutting through the air with a grace that left us all in awe. It was a spectacle that rivaled any raptor center, a wild and untamed display of nature’s power.
As the tour came to an end, we were treated to a video of the rogue wave from Season 2 of “Deadliest Catch,” a thrilling reminder of the dangers faced by those who brave the Bering Sea. The gift shop onboard offered a chance to take home a piece of the adventure, and the crew, including Captain Dave, Terry, Travis, and the girls, were more than happy to chat and take pictures with us.
Leaving the Aleutian Ballad, I felt a sense of camaraderie with the crew and my fellow adventurers. The experience had been both entertaining and educational, a glimpse into the rugged life of Alaskan fishermen. As I made my way back to the cruise ship, I couldn’t help but smile, already planning my next adrenaline-fueled escapade.
