Conquering Mount Kenya: A Photographer’s Ascent to Point Lenana
Drawn by the allure of Mount Kenya’s scenic Chogoria route, I embarked on a five-day adventure that promised breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. Join me as I recount the journey to Point Lenana, where the spirit of adventure and the beauty of nature converge.
A Journey Begins: The Ascent to Point Lenana
As a wildlife photographer with a deep love for Africa, the allure of Mount Kenya’s Chogoria route was irresistible. The journey began with a seamless pick-up from my hotel in Nairobi, where I was introduced to the team that would accompany me on this five-day adventure. The drive to the park gate was a scenic 3-4 hour journey, punctuated by a delightful stop for a local lunch. Meeting the team was a heartwarming experience; their warmth and professionalism set the tone for the days ahead.
The first night was spent in a cozy hut, a welcome respite after the day’s travel. The following days would see us camping in tents, a prospect that thrilled me as much as it promised to challenge me. The Chogoria route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, and as we began our ascent, I was not disappointed. The bamboo forests gave way to expansive views of the Mugi hills and Ithanguni, each step revealing more of the mountain’s majestic beauty.
The Heart of the Mountain: Camping Under the Stars
Camping on Mount Kenya was an experience unlike any other. Each night, as we pitched our tents under the vast African sky, I felt a profound connection to the land. The food, prepared by our talented guides, was a revelation. Abundant and delicious, it was far beyond what I had expected on a mountain expedition. Sharing meals with the team, I learned about their lives and their deep respect for the mountain, a respect that resonated with my own commitment to sustainable travel.
The journey to Lake Ellis and Minto’s Camp was a highlight, offering stunning views of the Gorges Valley and the peaks beyond. The sight of Lake Michaelson from the temple near Minto’s Camp was a moment of pure awe, a reminder of the natural wonders that make Africa so captivating. As we prepared for the final ascent to Point Lenana, the anticipation was palpable.
Reaching the Summit: A Sunrise to Remember
The climb to Point Lenana began in the early hours, a pre-dawn start that promised a sunrise like no other. As we reached the summit, the first rays of light painted the landscape in hues of gold and pink, a breathtaking reward for our efforts. Standing at nearly 5,000 meters, I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the journey that had brought me here.
The descent via the Sirimon route was a gentle return to the world below, a chance to reflect on the adventure and the bonds formed along the way. The flora and fauna of the Mackinder’s Valley were a fitting farewell, a reminder of the delicate balance of nature that I strive to capture in my work.
This Mount Kenya Adventure was more than a climb; it was a journey of discovery, a testament to the power of nature and the spirit of adventure. For those seeking a truly memorable experience, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
