The Call of the Wild: Mombasa to Maasai Mara

As a wildlife photographer, the allure of Kenya’s diverse ecosystems has always been irresistible. This year, I embarked on an 8-day safari from Mombasa to the Maasai Mara, a journey that promised not only the thrill of witnessing the elusive Lesser Kudu but also the chance to explore some of Africa’s most iconic landscapes. The adventure began in the bustling coastal city of Mombasa, where the Indian Ocean’s salty breeze mingled with the anticipation of the journey ahead.

Our first destination was the Maasai Mara National Reserve, a place that has long held a special place in my heart. The drive westward was punctuated by a stop at the Great Rift Valley View Point, a breathtaking vista that never fails to remind me of the Earth’s ancient and powerful forces. As we continued through the fertile lands of maize, wheat, and barley, I couldn’t help but reflect on the delicate balance between agriculture and wildlife conservation in this region.

Arriving at the Mara Base Camp in time for lunch, I was eager to set out on our first game drive. The afternoon sun cast long shadows over the savannah, and as we ventured deeper into the reserve, the landscape came alive with the sights and sounds of the wild. Zebras and Topis grazed peacefully, while the iconic silhouette of an Acacia tree stood against the setting sun, a scene that never fails to captivate my lens.

From the Mara to the Majestic Amboseli

Leaving the Maasai Mara was bittersweet, but the promise of new adventures awaited us at Lake Naivasha and Amboseli National Park. An early morning game drive offered a final glimpse of the Mara’s wonders, as the first light of dawn painted the horizon in hues of gold and pink.

At Lake Naivasha, a boat ride and a walk on Crescent Island provided a different perspective on Kenya’s wildlife. The tranquil waters and lush vegetation were a stark contrast to the open savannah, yet equally captivating. The journey continued to Amboseli, where the majestic silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro loomed large over the landscape.

Amboseli is renowned for its large herds of elephants, and capturing these gentle giants against the backdrop of the snow-capped mountain was a dream come true. As the sun set, casting a warm glow over the plains, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. This safari was not just a journey through Kenya’s landscapes but a reminder of the importance of sustainable travel and conservation efforts in preserving these treasures for generations to come.
