Amboseli National Park Facts
Situated at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” is derived from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust.” The park is famous for its large elephant herds. Lions, buffaloes, and thousands of wildebeests enhance the park’s beauty, along with a swampy lake. Drive to the Observation Hill for a panoramic view of Amboseli National Park and Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Mzima Springs - Enjoy a stop at the famous Mzima Springs, a series of four natural springs in Tsavo National Park, Kenya. Located in the park’s west, about 48 km from Mtito Andei, the springs originate from a natural reservoir beneath the Chyulu Hills to the north. The Chyulu range consists of volcanic lava rock and ash, which are too porous for rivers to flow. Instead, rainwater filters through the rock, spending up to 25 years underground before emerging 50 kilometers away at Mzima. This natural filtration results in Mzima’s famously clear stream, which flows through pools and rapids. Two kilometers downstream, the stream is blocked by solidified lava and disappears below the surface again.
