Great experience aboard the Ku’ Ula Kai!! - I took a six hour trip with Apex Charters and had the intension of hooking up with a blue marlin. Captain Rane and mate Kyle worked hard to get me a fish of a lifetime on the end of my line. We did not find a marlin but I was able to get three nice skip jacks in the boat. Mate Kyle was very good at showing me what he was doing while setting our gear for the day. If you love to fish, I would definitely recommend taking the six hour trip aboard the Apex Chaters Ku’ ula kai!

Great time had by all! - Wanting to take my three son-in-laws on a deep sea fishing excursion while we were in Kauai, I researched many of the local charters and settled on Apex Kauai Charters. We were not disappointed! Short Version: Comparable pricing, good communications, Large new 47’ boat, Captain Mark and Kyle were awsome, and brought in 3 Mahi and 3 Tuna, including one approx. 150lb. Would definitely recommend and use again. Long Version: I researched 6-hr (3/4 day) private fishing charter for 4 adults. Prices amongst the various top rated charters ranged from $950-$1200 (without taxes and fees), with Apex Kuai falling closer to the lower end. I went with a private instead of a shared charter because reviews (of various charters) showed a shared charter can get bumped by a private. Another positive factor for Apex was the boat. They were offering a 45’ boat where most of the others were in the 31-35ft range. Knowing Hawaiian seas in December are known to be rough, I went for the bigger boat. Apex also has a liberal catch policy of 100lb, where others range from 25-50lb. Meaning the Captain can keep any fish over that weight. Booked the charter through their online page in October and received confirmation. Only negative is getting charged immediately where some others only put a CC on hold. I emailed a week prior to confirm the charter and get an update on sea conditions. Received an email the next day with confirmation and there have been high seas. They did ask if we were flexible on our dates, which we could be. Received an email reminder the day prior with port and slip locations. I immediately noticed the boat changed from 45’ to 47’ Sport Fisher with AC and bathroom. Guess we are going in style! Also received a Text with some additional information with more specific directions, and a warning about potential for rough seas. I have been monitoring the weather and there were small craft advisories with the charter day as the first without one. Arrived at Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor, found the Captain and he gave us a rundown on the weather. He said would be rough for the first couple hours and then gets better. He gave us the option to push the charter to another day. We all decided to Go so we jumped onboard and off we went. We were the only boat leaving the harbor and the Captain mentioned no one has been out for over a week. This a new boat that was put into service in October. They still have their 45 footer, but that was down for maintenance. The rear deck has a new fighting chair and only a couple places to sit. The cabin is huge with couches along both sides and stairs down to a small bathroom. Yes, the cabin was Air Conditioned. There is a ladder to the next level where the Captain sits. There is seating towards the bow with nice views. There is also a spotting tower if you keep going up. Because the seas were so rough we didn’t stay indoors too much, since it was smoother in the rear. They provide water and you can bring food and other beverages (preferably canned instead of bottles) Dropped 6 lines within 15 minutes of setting out and fought 6-8’ swells with some 12’ thrown in for fun. The boat handled them well and the Captain did a great job getting through it. About 2hrs into the charter, we hook the first fish. 45 minutes later we finally landed a 150lb+ Ahi Tuna. A little over an hour later we had two bites at the same time resulting in two more Ahi Tuna (15lb & 35lb). 15 minutes later, we had 3 bites at once. This netted us three Mahi Mahi. Nothing else for the rest of the charter. Back to the harbor and laid out the catch. The Captain quickly cut up one of the Mahi and the mid-size Tuna. He was nice enough to trim and de-skin the filets. We got the whole Mahi and we only wanted half of the Tuna (we were realistic on what we would be able to eat within a couple days). Overall, we had a great time, enjoyed two nights of fresh fish and I highly recommend Apex Kauai if you are looking for a charter.

Best fishing experience we have had on Kauai! - If you are looking for the classiest, most comfortable boat on island, with an ALL-STAR crew, look no further. We have been out with most of the commercial fishing operations available on Kauai over the past 20 years. Apex has changed the game!! Captain Mark, who has fished from this harbor for 25 years, started the morning with an awesome safety briefing and fishing demo. He got us pumped to get out there on the water. Even the avid fisherman (and woman) in our group learned something. Kyle is a beast on the back deck. He had their competition set up in the water as the boat left the harbor. We got into a bird pile within the first half hour. We all agreed by the end of the trip, that no one on the boat wanted to catch fish more than the Captain and crew. Anyone who seeks out deep sea fishing on Kauai, knows that the waters are a bumpy. Shortly out of the harbor you are in thousands of feet of blue water. That's where the 1000lb marlin live! Their boat is really what makes the trip. It was clearly the largest, cleanest, most comfortable boat leaving the harbor that morning. We had AC in a comfortable lounge with couches, and they even had the game on (not sure how they did that). There was refrigeration for our drinks, a kitchen, and a legit bathroom. I can't say enough about how different this experience was from all our previous fishing trips. Our past experiences, left us believing that all of Kauai's fishing fleet is in rough shape. Their boat is luxury. We were hesitant, as this was a more expensive charter than others at the harbor, but it was money well spent!

Absolutely worth it - Apex is the go-to charter service! We booked them for my dad, he’s been wanting to go for years, and they surpassed my expectations. Captain Mark and Kyle were fun, kind and most importantly a talented team! And the new boat is gorgeous. I was truly impressed. Mahalo for the amazing memories - and all the good eats!

Sportfishing - My Wife and I were in Kauai for a week and wanted to do an open boat fishing trip. Capt. Mark and Tommy did an incredible job from start to finish for our trip. They were welcoming and the boat was very clean. We were lucky enough to land 10 tuna on our 4 hour trip and bring back a few tuna steaks with us for dinner. Couldn’t recommend Apex more. Next time we’re back we’ll be sure to book another trip with them.

Contact Apex Charters for a great charter experience. - Captain Mark and crew (Owen and Tommy) delivered on a great fishing trip. 3 Mahi-mahi and 2 Yellow tail. The 6 hours promised were 6 actual fishing hours, not including pre-trip briefing, transit times from the slip and the ocean and final distribution of the catch. The only disappointment was the lack of 1200 lb Blue Marlin but that was hardly the captain’s or crew’s fault. The Captain safely and skillfully maneuvered the boat and the crew worked their tails off rigging the poles, responding to fish strikes and preserving the catch. Apex is a professionally run organization which I recommend highly.

Great sights and enjoyable - Had a great time on the water yesterday. Was very slow fishing but captain kept us out there past our time to make sure we didn’t leave empty handed. Caught 2 beautiful Wahoos on the way in. Made the trip well worth it.

miserable in kauai. - we were on Kauai for a week and we wanted to take a fishing trip. was not the best experience. deep sea fishing. the poles were set and we were trolling. we could see the lure it was flapping about 30’ behind the boat. we just trolled back and forth for hours. the boat helper came down once and changed the lure. we trolled for ever. we could still see the lure. no one got in the least bit a bite. it was a 4 hour trip from 1100-1500. we ended up getting back at 5 pm. we were miserable crashing the waves for hours. not even a bite. or an attempt to try something different. over 400. for two. if you want a boat ride back and forth with not even an attempt to try something different and feeling miserable. this is the trip for you.
