Royal Botanical Gardens - Originally the king’s royal pleasure garden, it was later converted into a botanic garden and opened to the public. In 2016, it was visited by 1.2 million locals and 400,000 foreign visitors. Located near the Mahaweli River, the garden is renowned for its orchid collection and includes over 4,000 plant species, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. The “National Herbarium of Sri Lanka” is attached to it. The garden covers 147 acres (0.59 km²) at 460 meters above sea level, with 200 days of annual rainfall.

Udawalawe National Park, located on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka, was established on June 30, 1972, to provide a sanctuary for wild animals. The Blue Whale, the largest creature ever to have lived on earth, has a tongue that can weigh as much as an elephant and a heart as much as a car. Despite its size, it feeds on tiny shrimp-like animals called krill. An adult blue whale can consume 3,600 kg of krill daily. The whale’s mouth has a fascinating row of plates fringed with bristles to filter its main food source. With each mouthful, the whale can hold up to 5,000 kg of water and plankton. After forcing the water out, the whale licks the bristles with its fleshy tongue. Although a deep-water hunter, blue whales occasionally swim in small groups but usually alone or in pairs. They are among the loudest animals on the planet.
