The Tsum Valley, often referred to as the Hidden Valley, is a region rich with monasteries and villages inhabited entirely by a Tibetan population. It is located in the northern part of Manaslu, along the Nepal-Tibet border, and was a restricted area until 2008. Although it is part of Nepal, this Buddhist-influenced region has a distinct identity. Historically, Tsum was considered a separate area, distinct from both Nepal and Tibet. The Tsum Valley remains less explored compared to other tourist destinations, featuring relatively untouched and less traveled paths compared to more popular regions. The Tsum people have a unique family structure that may be surprising to many outsiders, where all brothers in a family are married to a single woman, a practice known as polyandry. In comparison to other areas, the Tsum Valley and Manaslu region are characterized by towering mountains, passes, deep gorges, villages, gompas, chortens, and mani walls.
