- Swayambhunath Temple - Journey to the western charm of the Valley, where the hilltop Swayambhunath stands as the nation’s oldest shrine. Welcoming both Hindus and Buddhists, this site is perfect for a refreshing hike and fresh air. Approximately 2,500 years old, Swayambhunath is Nepal’s oldest UNESCO Heritage site. The atmosphere is filled with positive energy and numerous pilgrims walking around the area. The main structure is a white dome atop the hill. Known as ‘The Monkey Temple’ due to the many monkeys living there, Swayambhunath offers a panoramic view of Kathmandu and the surrounding hills. On clear days, you can also see several mountain ranges to the north.
- Pashupatinath Temple - After lunch, take a brief rest before heading to Nepal’s most important Hindu temple, Pashupatinath, located north of the city. In the late afternoon, explore the other monuments and shrines within the expansive Pashupatinath complex, as non-Hindu visitors cannot enter the main temple area. Spanning both sides of the sacred Bagmati River, the complex features over 518 temples across 264 hectares.
- Boudhanath Stupa - From Pashupatinath, travel further northeast to reach Boudhanath Stupa, Nepal’s largest stupa and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Boudhanath is the heart of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The impressive dome architecture is complemented by the surrounding Buddhist ambiance. Enjoy Tibetan tea and the view from one of the rooftops, and shop for souvenirs in the nearby stores.
- Patan Durbar Square - Situated in the center of the ancient city of Patan, Patan Durbar Square is a cultural and historical treasure in Nepal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its exquisite architecture, detailed woodwork, and rich cultural legacy. The square is encircled by beautifully crafted palaces, temples, and courtyards, showcasing the Newar artisans’ skill.
Patan Durbar Square embodies the medieval allure of the Malla dynasty, featuring architectural wonders like Krishna Mandir, Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, and the Golden Temple. The square is a testament to past artistic brilliance and remains a lively hub for traditional arts and crafts.
Visitors can explore the Patan Museum, which boasts a remarkable collection of artifacts, sculptures, and artworks, offering insights into the region’s history and culture.
