Later, a visit to the 2,500-year-old Swoyambhunath Stupa, one of the city’s most iconic sites, will take place.
Swoyambhu Mahachaitya - Situated atop a hill west of the Kathmandu Valley, this site is a popular and instantly recognizable symbol of Nepal. Many tourists refer to it as the “Monkey Temple” due to the large groups of monkeys that inhabit the area. According to legend, the Bodhisattva Manjushree drained the water from a lake, revealing the Kathmandu Valley. The lotus on the lake’s island transformed into the hillock, and the blazing light from the lotus became the statue.

Patan Durbar Square - Patan, also known as Lalitpur, is the second-largest city in the valley. Patan has a strong Buddhist influence, with the city’s four corners marked by stupas said to have been created by a great Buddhist emperor around 250 BC. Durbar Square forms the heart of Patan, densely packed with temples and boasting a higher concentration of architecture than anywhere else in the valley.
Departure from Kathmandu
Pashupatinath Temple - Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred Shiva temples on the Indian subcontinent, attracting devotees from all over India, including many colorful Sadhus (wandering holy men). It is the largest temple complex in Nepal. Visiting Pashupatinath begins and ends a traditional pilgrimage circuit. Lord Pashupatinath’s supreme holiness is derived from the hallowed linga enshrined in the main temple and its location on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River. The sanctity of the Bagmati makes Pashupatinath Nepal’s most sacred cremation site. After the bodies are cremated, the ashes are scattered into the river, where they are carried down to meet the Ganges.
