Meteora ranks as the second most revered monastic site following Mount Athos. Perched atop these stone giants, the monasteries attract countless tourists from across the globe. Regrettably, of the original 30 monasteries, only a handful remain operational today: the Monastery of Great Meteoron, the Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, the Monastery of St. Stephen, The Monastery of Rousanou, the Monastery of Varlaam, and the Monastery of Holy Trinity.
The origins of Meteora continue to be a source of fascination and mystery for scholars who are dedicated to unraveling the secrets of its geological formation. It earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.
