This majestic formation consists of towering stone pillars that are believed to have been created around 60 million years ago, with subsequent transformations due to seismic activity and erosion shaping them into their current form.
Meteora ranks as the second most revered monastic site, following Mount Athos. Perched atop these stone giants, the monasteries attract countless visitors from across the globe. Originally, it is thought that there were around 30 monasteries, but today only six remain operational: the Great Meteoron Monastery, St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery, St. Stephen Monastery, Rousanou Monastery, Varlaam Monastery, and the Holy Trinity Monastery.
The origins of Meteora continue to be a source of fascination and study for many scientists who are dedicated to unraveling the secrets of its geological formation. In recognition of its significance, Meteora was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.
