Esala Perahera Festival - The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers, & many more. This is held in Esala (July or August) which is the month that is believed to commemorate the first teaching given by the Buddha after he attained enlightenment. The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days while various festivities can be witnessed right throughout. The Sinhalese term

means a parade of musicians, dancers, singers, acrobats and various other performers.

Kumbal Procession
The Kumbal Procession starts on the sixth night, lasting for five continuous days. The Devale Procession initially gathers in front of the Temple of the Tooth, where the emblems kept on the ransivige (a structure resembling a dome) are accompanied by the Basnayake Nilames (the lay caretakers of the Devales). All these processions would be enlivened by drummers and dancers.
For the next five nights, the “Devale Processions” occur within the compounds of the four Devales, where the priest of each Devale takes the pole every evening. This event is accompanied by music and drumming, flag and canopy carriers, spearman and the Ran Ayudha, the holy insignia of the Gods.
The following key moments are signaled by the blasting of cannonballs, the sound of which can be heard throughout Kandy.
