Esala Perahera Festival - The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers, & many more. This is held in Esala (July or August) which is the month that is believed to commemorate the first teaching given by the Buddha after he attained enlightenment. Kumbal Perahera
Commencing on the sixth evening, the Kumbal Perahera persists over a span of five consecutive nights. Initially, the assembly of the Devale Perahera occurs at the forefront of the sacred Temple of the Tooth. Here, the ceremonial emblems are mounted upon the ransivige (a vaulted edifice) under the escort of the Basnayake Nilames (secular overseers of the Devales). Amidst these Peraheras, one can witness a multitude of drummers and dancers.
