Kandy Lake - Known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, Kandy Lake is an artificial lake in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka. Constructed in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe next to the Temple of the Tooth, the lake has been reduced in size over time. Fishing is prohibited as it is a protected lake. Legends abound, including one about the small island at its center, which was used by the king’s harem for bathing and was connected to the palace by a secret tunnel.

Kandy - Dambulla

Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, or Sinhagiri, is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. This site of historical and archaeological importance is dominated by a massive rock column nearly 200 meters high.

Dambulla - Dambulla is steeped in history. For centuries, the area surrounding Dambulla, covering over fifty acres, was home to forest-dwelling monks. These monks had minimal contact with the public, focusing on meditation. Archaeological evidence confirms the existence of cave shrines in Dambulla. Inscriptions indicate that the shrine and surrounding areas were donated to the monks by royalty, nobility, monks, and nuns. Recently, the climb to the cave shrine, 600 feet above the plains and 100 feet above sea level, has been made more accessible.

Dambulla Cave Temple - The Dambulla Cave Temple is mentioned in numerous religious and historical texts. The temple consists of five caves. The first cave contains seven images, including the Buddha passing away, his disciple Ananda, Vishnu, and four other Buddhas. The second cave houses sixty Buddha images. The third cave, built by a Kandyan king on a monk’s advice, features a 30-foot reclining Buddha. The fourth cave, though small, is unique and contains several Buddha images and a miniature stupa. The fifth cave is the most recent addition and includes a reclining Buddha surrounded by numerous Buddha images.

Dambulla - Polonnaruwa

Gal Vihara - Also known as Gal Viharaya and originally as Uttararama, Gal Vihara is a rock temple of the Buddha located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in North Central Province, Sri Lanka. It was crafted in the 12th century by Parakramabahu.

The Palace of King Parakramabahu - Constructed by King Parakramabahu, this ancient man-made reservoir is Sri Lanka’s largest rainwater tank. Covering 2,500 hectares, it holds 134 million cubic meters of water. This reservoir provides irrigation for the agricultural areas of Polonnaruwa and its surroundings.

Lotus Pond - This site features a large pond or bathing pool designed in the shape of a blossoming lotus, with five conical rings of eight petals descending in steps. The upper sections have cutaways for easy access to higher levels. This intricate stone bath, made of solid-cut granite, is visually striking. It may have been the work of Nissanka Malla or Parakramabahu.

Polonnaruwa - Anuradhapura

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi - Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred fig tree located in the Mahamewna Gardens, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is believed to be a southern branch of the historical Sri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India, under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment.

Mihintale - Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka at Mihintale in 247 B.C., making it a place of historical and religious significance. Mihintale features sixty-eight cave dwellings that provided monks with shade and shelter. Lay assistants were required to submit weekly expenditure lists, monthly account summaries, and annual balance sheets.

Ruwanwelisaya - Ruwanwelisaya, standing at 300 feet, is the oldest and smallest of the three giant brick edifices in the world. This stupa is one of the eight places of veneration in Anuradhapura, believed to have been visited by Buddha during his three visits to Sri Lanka.

Moonstone or Sandakada Pahana - The moonstone is a prevalent architectural feature in Sri Lanka, shaped like a half-moon and found at the base of short staircases. The steps are flanked by two balustrades, ending with two large vertical stones.

Anuradhapura - Nuwara Eliya

Horton Plains National Park - Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. This plateau, at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 meters, is rich in biodiversity, with many species endemic to the region.

Nuwara Eliya - Known as the Garden City of Asia, Nuwara Eliya is located at 6,182 feet above sea level at the foot of Mount Pidurangala, Sri Lanka’s highest peak. Discovered by Sir Samuel Baker in 1819, the colonial government would relocate to Nuwara Eliya for three months each year—March, April, and May—when Colombo was hot and humid. Both domestic and international tourists visit Nuwara Eliya to enjoy the pleasant climate, play golf, stroll through the park, admire lush plantations, visit the Hakgala Gardens, and explore the area, ending at Horton Plains, which features a dramatic drop in elevation.

Little Adam’s Peak View Point - Hiking Little Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka is a must-do activity in Ella. The peak can be easily hiked without a guide, as there is a marked path leading up the mountain, with plenty of signposts to guide the way.

Nine Arches Bridge - The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is part of the Demodara loop, spanning 91 meters at a height of 24 meters. The beautiful nine arches make it a picturesque spot, especially as it is set in a dense jungle and agricultural area. Behind the railway, a forest thrives, and below, tea leaves are cultivated.

Ella - Yala - Galle

Yala National Park - Yala National Park is a vast area of forest, grassland, and lagoons bordering the Indian Ocean in southeast Sri Lanka. It is home to wildlife such as leopards, elephants, and crocodiles, as well as hundreds of bird species. Inland, Sithulpawwa is an ancient Buddhist monastery, and nearby caves contain centuries-old rock paintings. To the southwest, Magul Maha Viharaya also features ancient Buddhist ruins.

Galle Fort - The name ‘Galle’ associated with the fort has various interpretations. One suggests it derives from the Portuguese word ‘Gallo,’ meaning “rooster.” Another suggests it comes from the Sinhala word “galaa,” meaning a “cattle herd” or a place where cattle were herded.

Galle Fort Lighthouse - The Galle Lighthouse is located within the landmark Galle Fort. Built seven meters above the road on the ramparts, it is Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, dating back to 1848. The original lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1934 and was rebuilt to its current height of 26 meters. Situated within the walls of the ancient Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is a well-known tourist attraction and the country’s most frequently visited lighthouse.

Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple - Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most significant temples in Colombo, Sri Lanka, blending modern architecture with cultural essence. Located on Beira Lake, it was completed in the late 19th century.

Independence Memorial Hall - Independence Memorial Hall is a national monument in Sri Lanka, built to commemorate the country’s independence from British rule and the restoration of full governing responsibility to a Ceylonese-elected legislature on February 4, 1948.
