Discovering the Heart of Kampala

As a family travel writer, I am always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and thrilling for the whole family. Next, we made our way to the Kabaka’s Palace, the royal residence of the Buganda Kingdom. The palace grounds were a treasure trove of history, from the remains of the king’s car to the cannon gun and the infamous torture chambers of Idi Amin. Ben’s storytelling brought the past to life, painting a vivid picture of the kingdom’s history and its impact on modern-day Uganda.

The kids were particularly fascinated by the stories of the Buganda kings and their 84 wives. It was a unique opportunity for them to learn about a different culture and its traditions. The palace visit was not only educational but also a chance for the family to bond over shared discoveries and new knowledge.

Unveiling the Mysteries of the Kasubi Tombs

Our final stop was the UNESCO-listed Kasubi Tombs, the burial site of the Buganda royal family. The tombs are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Buganda people, and walking through the site felt like stepping back in time. The guides at the tombs were incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories of the four kings buried there and the significance of the 84 houses built for the king’s wives.

The kids were amazed by the grandeur of the tombs and the stories of the royal family. It was a perfect way to end our tour, leaving us with a deeper understanding of the Buganda culture and its traditions.
