Kalpitiya - A variety of whale species frequently visit the sea near Kalpitiya’s coast. The continental shelf is proximate to Alankuda Beach, which means there’s no need to venture too far into the open ocean.
The most sizable whales are occasionally spotted breaching the surface, especially when they approach the coast to feed around 3.5 km from the beach between Norochcholai and Talawila, right in front of our resort. Among them are the Bryde’s whale, Eden’s whale, and the colossal blue whale, the largest animal on the planet, reaching lengths of up to 28 m.
In the deeper, azure waters, roughly 4-5 nm from the coastline, you might also encounter various species of toothed whales and sea dolphins. These species include the sperm whale, both dwarf and pygmy sperm whales, Risso’s dolphins, pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, Fraser’s dolphins, spotted dolphins, and striped dolphins.
The encounter with these mysterious marine mammals is awe-inspiring and mesmerizing, providing an incredibly humbling experience.
