Additional Information

Around 65 million years ago during the Early Period, Meteora came into existence. Prominent kings such as Ioannis Uresis Palaeologus of Thessaly and Epirus once resided here.

In the present day, Meteora is globally renowned for its varying elevations that enable climbing activities of all levels (from easy to difficult). The only restriction for climbers is to refrain from climbing rocks that are part of the active monasteries.

At present, only six out of the original thirty monasteries are functional, and since 1988, they have been recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
