Highlights
  • Borobudur Temple - Upon your arrival at Borobudur, take the opportunity to discover the temple with a local guide, and delve into the narrative of Buddha Gautama as illustrated on the temple walls through detailed reliefs (during a walking tour). As the largest Buddhist temple on the planet, Borobudur is celebrated as one of the seven wonders of the world. Experience the presence of 504 Buddha statues, each meticulously sculpted from a single block of stone.
  • Candi Mendut (Temple) - Erected in the 7th century, Mendut predates Borobudur and continues to be a place of worship to this day. The temple was completed under the rule of King Indra from the Sailendra dynasty. An inscription from the 7th century reveals that King Indra of Sailendra commissioned the construction of a holy edifice called Venuvana, which translates to “bamboo forest.” Inside Mendut temple, you will encounter three grand statues of Buddha alongside Bodhisattvas (Buddhist deities) such as Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani.

Ask for Atok as a guide for a great experience. - This was our first time booking a Viator excursion and we weren't sure how it would work, choosing a pick up location and identifying our guide. We were very happy with all arrangements. Using What's App to communicate was very helpful. Our guide Atok was the best. Very responsive, full of local knowledge, very adept at negotiating traffic and fun to be with over the 2-1/2 hour journey to and from Borobudur. He was very willing to answer all our questions and shared many interesting insights into the history, the culture and family life in Indonesia. If you take this excursion, we would highly recommend Atok for an enjoyable and memorable experience. His energy and interest in providing an enriching experience will be something you will appreciate. All in all, our Viator excursion to Borobudur turned out to be a great choice for us. A huge Buddhist Temple worth the drive to see - Yes, its a two hour ride from the port to Borobodur Temple in Yogyakarta Indonesia and the drive is not for the faint of heart... but is/was so worth it. Our driver Atok, who lives out near Yogyakarta drove out early in the morning to meet the ship and drove us out to visit this temple and the Medut Temple. You are provided with temple sandals with the price of the ticket, as you are not permitted to climb the temple with your own shoes. But once you are provided with temple sandals (they will have your size), they give you a bag for your shoes, and then the bag and the sandals are yours to keep. It was very hot and this was at the beginning of dry season. For your comfort you may want to walk with an umbrella or a wide brimmed hat ( yes I hate mine too) as well as water. Our guide provided 2 bottles of water per person at the outset. The pace of the walk up the temple may be moderate but the steps are narrow and there will be a lot of "traffic" going up and down. Note that the access to the temple is limited to a certain number of people per day. So booking a tour or getting tickets in advance is important to avoid disappointment. At the temple you will get a local tour guide and they will lead you up the temple steps and give the history of same. The view is amazing and the carvings in the temple walls tell the story of the times. Your entry ticket to the temple access is timed at entry and you will receive a wristband when you enter. This is a one way access so if you leave, there is no "free return". Get all your pictures and experience before you take the walk down. Medut Temple and the modest grounds was very interesting as the Buddhist temple area includes what I would say is a replica of Bayon Temple South gate (Angkor Wat Cambodia) including the faces of Jayavarman VII, which was a surprise. Our driver (Atok) was very accommodating and offered and took all the pictures of us that we wanted, and then some. Also, as advertised in the tour description, we got a souvenir to take home at the end of the tour, a very nice and appreciated touch, especially because we did not have to haggle with any of the shopkeepers to get it. Getting out of the grounds of the Borobudur temple, will be a maze of shops... it may take as long as 20 minutes, even if you don't stop to buy anything. I think there has to be a shortcut out of that haggle fest ... ask your driver/guide so you don't "waste time if you are not interested" in that process. Thanks to Atok for a fantastic day in Yogyakarta and for getting us back to the ship ON TIME!!

An amazing experience! - Book this trip! You will not be disappointed! Booking this trip was extremely easy and they answered any questions and concerns promptly. I picked WhatsApp to communicate which was convenient especially while on the cruise ship. I received a message the day prior confirming all the information. I also received a message from my driver, Mr. Adit, who made sure to let me know he would be directly outside the cruise port holding a sign with my name on it. The morning of the excursion that is exactly where I found Mr. Adit with my name nicely printed out and extremely easy to find. It was at this time we were led to a well kept vehicle to start our 2.5 hour trip to Borobudur. Mr. Adit was not only extremely knowledgeable, but he also provided a beautiful bowl of fruits. We arrived at Borobudur where Mr. Adit handled everything! I seriously mean everything. Mr. Adit handled the tickets, held our shoes for us while on the tour (had to switch into special sandals so we don’t damage the temple), and even took amazing photographs of us! Mr. Adit also made sure we made it back to the cruise port on time for our departure. This excursion was beautiful and by far one of the best experiences I’ve had. If you can I would definitely request Mr. Adit as your

The tour guide Hibza is very nice. He drives very safely and quickly. He always cares about passengers, which makes me feel at ease when traveling alone!

As our ship arrived in a Java port, driver, Nur was already waiting for us. He drove 4 of us in a very comfortable car and gave us all interesting information during the trip. He’s nice tourist guide as well as the driver. Your ended up in 7PM. Thank you Nur for everything, hope to see you again ☺️ Best regards from Serbia

Awesome Borobudur. Questionable Reservation? - This will be a mixed review. First off Borobudur should not be missed! In my opinion it was more impressive than Ayutthaya and equaled Angkor Wat. We were on a Viking cruise and elected not to take their shore excursion opting for "private" over a slow moving busload. Good that we did because Viking only took passengers to the Temple, but DID NOT purchase wristbands for them to climb to the top--how disappointing!. (Note that if you are on a cruise it takes about 2 1/2 hours to drive each way and you probably will not have time to see Mendut Temple--we didn't. You will most likely have to rush and remind your Viator driver for his scheduled lunch/souvenir shop stop to get back to the ship on time! Keep repeating this to him!). Your tour is only for a driver who has arranged for Borobudur's required tour guide in English as well as the flip flops that you must wear for environmental concerns to hike up top. Now for the controversial part. Dani was a very good driver. However our tour was to be PRIVATE, reservations were made months before and this tour is listed as private for only your party. We were surprised...as was the other couple that had booked recently...to have a not so private tour. The couple turned out to be lovely, but that may not always be the case, and five hours in a car plus lunch could be awkward. If the tour is advertised as private, and CHARGED as private...IT SHOULD BE PRIVATE!!! I don't care if you "have a larger vehicle". It is booked to be PRIVATE. I'm not sure if this is a Viator scheduling problem or an overly greedy Asmaradhana Borobudurs Tours/driver but it happened and should not have!
