Set out on an exciting and unique exploration of the urban sprawl of Soweto via bike. Experiencing the township as a resident would, catch sight of Hector Pietersen Museum, Mandela House, and Tutu House.

Kickoff your biking journey in Killarney, where Soweto’s inception back in 1904 and its history will be shared. Next, proceed to Mama Lilian Ngoyi’s house, an opposer of apartheid. Ride to the Hector Pietersen Museum, the site of the Soweto uprising, and a pivotal point in apartheid’s history.

This tour brings you up close to Soweto’s key features. Visit the Mandela House, once the home of Nelson Mandela from 1946 to 1962. Afterwards, traverse past Tutu House on Vilakazi Street, the former home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his family. Discuss the Nobel Laureate’s role in bringing apartheid to an end in South Africa.

Allow your legs a rest as you pause for lunch. Try the local South African kota sandwiches before pedalling back to where your tour began.

Hang out in Soweto - It’s a must xx - Linda from Lebo’s bicycle tours took us on an immersive tour of Soweto and was such an amazing guide. Full of knowledge, humour and all round great guy. This warm and vibrant community welcomed us with open hearts and we learnt so much about the history of Soweto within this atmosphere topped off by a delicious lunch back at the community hostel. The hostel itself is a truly magical and unique place. If you want to feel a part of the Soweto community. Do this! Sending love and thanks. xx Monica Edwards

Excellent experience - Our guide thato was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the Soweto history and gave us lots of interesting facts. Cycling Soweto was an experience. I found the people to be very friendly with many shouting and waving hello to us as we passed. The only downside was that the bikes are not really suitable for riding the hills in Soweto. They should have gears.

Great time in Soweto with Themba - We had a great time with Themba! He was a fantastic guide, very personable and open to answering our questions. The bike ride was very nice. Definitely had some challenging uphill portions but he was very cognizant of people's different levels and would recommend walking with the bikes as needed for safety/traffic. The sandwich in the middle of the tour was a good experience to try a soweto specific creation- very interesting with bread, fries, a fried egg, and a few different sauces. We had a fantastic time.

On time, friendly guide, knowledgeable. Great experience - That was an amazing day. We had the best guide we can ask for, Temba Sowetian with powerful knowledge of Soweto history and whole South Africa. We had so much fun during the lunch time. Then we continue our bike tour through Soweto, we enjoy so much the real African experience provided by Temba. He was not only guide we become friends for good. I have no words to express how grateful I am.

Authentic Experience with Themba! - What a day! My wonderful guide Themba took me on a really educational journey through Soweto. It didn’t feel like a guided tour. It felt like a day out with a good friend who was showing me around his neighbourhood. Can’t recommend it enough.
