Additional Information

Located in the North West Province, Madikwe Game Reserve shares its northern border with Botswana and is nestled between the Dwarsberg Mountains and the Marico river. Thanks to a diverse range of habitats, from acacia savannah to riverine, the reserve is home to a unique mix of wildlife including wild dogs, cheetahs, lions, both white and black rhinos, buffalos, and elephants. The reserve features a brilliant display of bird species and is one of the rare wildlife reserves in South Africa that is malaria-free. The ‘Operation Phoenix’, initiated in 1993, facilitated the relocation of over 8,000 game animals into the park over six years. Predators including cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, and lions from the Etosha National Park (Namibia) and Pilanesberg National Park were introduced into Madikwe in 1996. Furthermore, an influx of 180 elephants from Zimbabwe’s drought-stricken Gonarezhou Game Reserve also occurred.

Madikwe River Lodge / Safari Tour - Fantastic experience with all staff at the river lodge friendly and very attentive making our visit extra special. For our safari we were lucky enough to get Benny as our ranger to take us out. Benny’s knowledge and willingness to go that extra mile with a little bit of luck added resulted in us gaining sight of all the big five, Hyenas, Wild Dogs and much more, and all close up. An exceptional experience!!!
