The Mogao Grottoes, located in Dunhuang, stand as an archetypical world heritage site. It houses a Buddhist cave shrine and also functions as a heritage art museum, stocking an array of murals, sculptures, and architectural spectacles. More than just a reservoir of unique art, it encapsulates a thousand years of cultural exchange facilitated by the Silk Road, involving China, India, Persian, Greco-Roman and Central Asian cultures, the importance of which surpasses that of silk or other luxury commodities.
