- Tanot Mata Temple - Located 153 km from Jaisalmer, the temple is accessible by hourly taxis, offering a two-hour drive for devotees and visitors. Those camping in the Thar Desert can also hire a cab for a brief visit to this legendary site. The Tanot Mata shrine gained national recognition after the 1965 India-Pakistan war, where despite over 1000 bombs being launched, none exploded near the temple, safeguarding civilians and Indian soldiers.
- Kuldhara Abandoned Village - Deserted since the 19th century, Kuldhara is approximately 18 kilometers (12.4 miles) southwest of Jaisalmer. The village, with its numerous dilapidated sandstone houses and dusty roads, is rumored to be cursed and haunted, holding a mysterious secret waiting to be uncovered.
- Bada Bagh - Situated equidistant from Jaisalmer and Lodhruva, Bada Bagh, meaning “big garden,” features a series of royal cenotaphs or chhatris of Jaisalmer Maharajas, including Jai Singh II. The first cenotaph was constructed by his son, Lunkaran, in the 16th century to honor Jai Singh II’s efforts in greening the city. The cenotaphs boast beautifully carved ceilings and elegant equestrian statues of rulers, offering tourists stunning sunset views.
- Jaisalmer Fort - Known as the Golden Fort, it is located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, and is one of the few “living forts” globally, with nearly a quarter of the old city’s population residing within. For most of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer, with settlements outside its walls emerging in the 17th century. Built in 1156 AD by Rajput Rawal Jaisal, the fort was a key point on major trade routes, including the ancient Silk Road. In 2013, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
- Jain Temples - Within Jaisalmer Fort are seven Jain temples, showcasing exquisite architectural designs. From ceilings to tombs to gateways, every part is adorned with mirrors, frescoes, and carvings. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, these temples are dedicated to various Jain Tirthankars. The walls feature animal and human figures carved in the renowned Dilwara temple style. The Jain temple also houses a library, Gyan Bhandar, attracting many tourists.
- Kothari’s Patwaon-Ki-Haveli - The Patwa Havelis are a cluster of five havelis in a narrow lane in the city’s heart. The first haveli, Kothari’s Patwa Haveli, is exceptionally preserved and open to visitors, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of the former Patwas.
- Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli - Constructed by Maharawal Berisal in 1885 CE as the residence of Diwan Mohata Nathmal, Jaisalmer’s then Prime Minister, this haveli was designed by two brothers, Hathi and Lulu. An interesting story surrounds its construction, as both brothers built the haveli’s facets simultaneously, resulting in similar but not identical sides.
- Salam Singh Ki Haveli (Moti Mahal) - Built in 1815, Salim Singh Ki Haveli is a remarkable example of Rajasthani architecture with Mughal influences. Once home to Salim Singh, Jaisalmer’s powerful prime minister, the haveli is renowned for its 38 intricately designed balconies and distinctive peacock-shaped roof. Its narrow structure, resembling a ship’s stern, earned it the name “Jahaz Mahal.” With exquisite stone carvings, latticework windows, and a commanding view of the Golden City, it remains one of Jaisalmer’s most unique and historic landmarks.
