Jaisalmer Fort - Located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few “living forts” globally, similar to Carcassonne in France, with about a quarter of the old city’s population still residing within its walls. For most of its 800-year history, the fort was the city itself. The first settlements outside the fort emerged in the 17th century to accommodate Jaisalmer’s growing population. Built in 1156 AD by Rajput Rawal Jaisal, from whom it gets its name, Jaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan and was strategically positioned on key trade routes, including the ancient Silk Road. Its massive yellow sandstone walls appear tawny lion-colored during the day and turn honey-gold at sunset, blending with the desert landscape, earning it the name Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. Situated on Trikuta Hill in the Thar Desert, the fort is now on the southern edge of Jaisalmer city, with its towering fortifications visible from miles away. In 2013, Jaisalmer Fort, along with five other forts in Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Hill Forts of Rajasthan group during the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Initiated by Guman Chand Patwa, a wealthy banker, it took nearly 55 years to complete, finished by his sons. The haveli’s golden hue and intricate architecture captivate visitors, with its exquisite wall paintings, beautiful jharokhas (balconies), archways, and gateways. A tour of the haveli can be completed in about an hour and is a highlight of any city tour.

Bada Bagh - Bada Bagh, also known as Barabagh (meaning Big Garden), is a garden complex located about 6 km north of Jaisalmer on the way to Ramgarh, Rajasthan. Overlooking a mango grove, it features royal cenotaphs, or chhatris, of the Maharajas of Jaisalmer State, starting with Jait Singh III (d. 1528), built by his son Maharawal Lunkaran Singh. Over time, 104 members of the royal family had their cenotaphs constructed here. Maharawal Lunkaran Singh also completed the Jait Bandh dam project, initiated by his father, which remains useful for water conservation today.

Amar Sagar Jain Temple - Adjacent to the renowned Amar Sagar Lake and south of Lodurva, the Jain Temple dedicated to Lord Parshwanath, known as Adeshwar Nath Jain Temple, was built by Patwa Bafna Himmat Ram in 1928. Although Amar Sagar was once a water reservoir, it is now mostly dry. The temple’s intricate hand carvings and small domes are stunning, with its golden architecture adorned with Jaisalmeri stones shining beautifully in daylight. The temple is a masterpiece, with sections featuring unique ivory marble exteriors. Inside, there are various animal figurines and depictions of Lord Tirthankara. Two other nearby temples also boast unique elements, with old step-wells, galleries, and latticed walls commonly seen in the area.

Kuldhara Abandoned Village - Kuldhara is an abandoned village in Jaisalmer District, Rajasthan, India. Established in the 13th century, it was once a thriving village inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins. It was deserted by the early 19th century for unknown reasons, possibly due to a dwindling water supply or, as local legend suggests, persecution by Jaisalmer State’s minister Salim Singh. A 2017 study indicates that Kuldhara and neighboring villages were abandoned due to an earthquake. Over the years, Kuldhara has gained a reputation as a haunted site, and the Rajasthan government began developing it as a tourist attraction in the 2010s.
