Highlights
  • Pedra da Gávea - Our Pedra da Gavea Hiking Tour in Rio de Janeiro, happens between São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca neighborhoods, right on the coast of Rio de Janeiro city, in the Tijuca Forest National Park, on a legendary monolith with the face of an ancient giant, rising 842 meters (aprox. 2762 feet) above the sea level. It is one of the world’s largest monolith on a coastline. Pedra da Gavea is an enormous rock surrounded by native, lush vegetation, in the Atlantic Rainforest. This massive rock is composed of gneiss and granite, and because of its location, it has been eroded by the elements.

Our Pedra da Gavea Hiking Tour in Rio de Janeiro is indicated only to regular hikers in good physical conditions. It takes at least 2 hours to reach the summit and the use of climbing gear is needed at some point, for safety reasons. The climbing part is short and easy, and no previous experience is required. The trail is steep but doable for regular hikers but can be a bit challenging for travelers without experience, or for casual hikers . Once there at the summit, the most beautiful view of the city can be contemplated.

Pedra de Gavea Guided Hike Review - Had an amazing time on the Pedra de Gavea guided hike. I was looking for a local guide to help with the steep rock face where you have to do a little rock climbing. I went up with Flavio (a local hiker/climber). He spoke great English. Super knowledgeable about the park and climbing safety. I felt completely safe. This was one of the best hikes I have ever done. If you are a hiker and looking for a great challenge and the best view of Rio then look no further! Pick-up and drop off were easy. Would highly recommend Rio Adventures.

Pedra da Gávea with Guide/com Guia Eduardo Steiner - Hey everyone we did this trip up to the Pedra da Gávea with guide Eduardo Steiner and it was really fantastic. One of our family members was having a real challenging time going up and Eduardo gave her a real good encouraging talk and she ended up making it way up to the top. Eduardo is a really great guide, we had a great time together. This place is incredible if you've never gone you should. It like walking up to heaven. There's nothing like it!

Great hike and guide - We were a group of 6 and were taken on the hike by Rafael. At first we contemplated doing the hike ourselves but are so glad that we went with a tour guide! Rafael was so informative and helpful on the hardest/steepest parts of the hike, I don’t think we would have dared to go all the way to the top without him and the ropes. The mountain itself was beautiful and the views definitely worth the trek! Highly recommend!!

Pedra da Gavea hike - This hike was a perfect escape from the hustle of the crowded city. It’s probably about moderate intensity with some scrambling and only a small section of actual climbing. Our guide was professional, friendly and consistently checked to make sure everyone was managing alright. During the climb of Carrasqueira to get to the last stretch before the peak he put us in harnesses and showed us the correct technique and easiest pass to make it to the top, demonstrating patience and understanding even when one member of our group of 4 became hesitant about progressing further. The views at the top were spectacular and well worth the effort of hike. Communication with Rio Adventures was efficient and able to be done easily in English (something that’s not possible everywhere in Rio). I will definitely do another outdoor adventure with them when I return to Rio.

Best adventure in Rio de Janeiro! - We just got back to our hotel after climbing Pedra da Gávea. Our tour guide Rafael Cajá is by far the best tour guide we have had in Rio thus far. You could tell that he LOVES what he does. The hike to the top of Pedra da Gávea can be challenging but the rewards are breathtaking. Rafael picked us up a the hotel and when he saw that we were wearing jeans, he recommended to change it for more comfortable clothing like shorts or leggings. On the way there we stopped at a grocery store to buy snacks to eat at the top of the rock. During the hike we stopped at a water spring to refill our water bottles with the freshest water in all Rio. Highly recommend this tour if you want to do something more than Sugar Loaf and Corcovado.
