- Galata Tower - Galata Tower, a famous landmark in Istanbul, symbolizes the city’s rich history and offers stunning views. Perched on a hill in the Galata district, this cylindrical stone tower rises approximately 63 meters high. Its origins date back to the Byzantine era when a wooden tower, Magalos Pyrgos (Great Tower), was built in the 5th century to oversee Constantinople and the Golden Horn. However, the original tower was destroyed by fires, earthquakes, and the Fourth Crusaders’ sack of Constantinople in 1204.
In 1348, the Genoese community reconstructed the tower, naming it Christea Turris (Tower of Christ). It remained Istanbul’s tallest structure until 1749 when the Beyazıt Tower was built. Throughout its history, the Galata Tower has served as a jail, observatory, and watchtower during the Ottoman era.
