Additional Information

What could be more delightful than to spend a calm, sunny day at the zoo with family, your significant other, or even by oneself? This zoo is unique, being the only one of its kind globally. Elevated at 750 meters (approximately .5 miles), it holds the distinction of being Europe’s highest zoo. Despite its high location, it is easily accessible and is not far from the city center.

Many different species of animals, including lynx, eagles, fish, and birds, as well as wolves and bears, are housed at the zoo. Spring is a great time to visit due to the birth of new animals which makes the place more lively. Additionally, the petting area is home to a variety of rare and local species of cows, pigs, goats, and sheep that can be observed at close quarters.

Your trip to this zoo starts with a ride on the Hungerburgbahn from the Station Congress located near Innsbruck’s city center. This ride swiftly takes you to the Station Alpine Zoo in just 5 minutes and brings you back at the end of your zoo adventure.

  • Children under 4 are free
  • Most paths and exhibits in the zoo are accessible to wheelchairs, especially those close to the entrance – but don´t forget – some parts of the zoo area are quite steep.

Awesome! Both for younger and older! - Awesome! If you follow the bear footsteps, you will come across all the animals and see them from all sides! The enclosures are nicely tailored to the animals and it was a nice walk. Grandma of 83 was also with us. Some of the steeper paths were a bit of a challenge, but there are plenty of benches everywhere to take a rest. Together with the Hungerburgbahn this is a nice trip! We took the bus to the Nordkette and the Hungerburgbahn down with a stop at the Alpenzoo

Visit alpenzoo - Beautiful park for children. It is worth a visit of at least half a day. Suitable for strollers. Very convenient to get there with the funicular that leaves close to the city center. The ticket can be purchased online or at the ticket office at the funicular departure point, also opting for the Alpenzoo+funicular combo. Inside the zoo there is also a self-service restaurant

Great Visit - Great visit. We spent a couple of hours here when visiting Innsbrook. Plenty to see and lots of information about all of the animals. Some steep hills which some may need to factor into a visit, but this was fine for us. Animals looked happy. Would recommend.

FOR SMALL CHILDREN YES! - We visited the park, leaving the car at the conference car park in the center of Innsbruck and taking the funicular (station a two-minute walk from the car park) reaching the zoo at the second stop. However, pay attention to the parking prices (we spent €16 leaving the car for more than 6 hours) and to the fact that the parking spaces are not many and narrow. However, it remains the perfect solution if after the zoo you intend to visit the center of Innsbruck since the car park is a 5-minute walk from the Golden Roof. Let's talk about the zoo. Visiting time 3 full hours managing to see most if not all of the animals. For some animals such as bears, I recommend visiting the areas in the late afternoon as the animal comes out of hiding to have dinner. Along the way you will find many recreational-educational game installations but without explanations in Italian. The park is well kept and clean. At the end of the route children can find a beautiful playground. Highly recommended but without claiming to have to see all the fauna given that their habitats are rightly large with areas where the animals can take refuge from the human eye.

Sin - Beautiful but it must be due to the season or many animals were rarely seen. Years ago there were at least 6 otters and all lively. Wolves too. Still beautiful though

Different from usual - Very beautiful zoo with animals different from the usual zoos... even more characteristic of the place, placed in their natural habitats, such as moose, chamois, ibex and lynx and many others. The interesting thing is that in some areas you entered right inside the fence 😅... obviously where there was no danger! Minimal explanations also in Italian, but many interesting things were lost because only in German 🤷🏼‍♀️ The only flaw is that we didn't understand where to take the cable car... so we paid the ticket for both the zoo and the cable car... but in the end we found ourselves directly in the zoo without going through the cable car... this is because it's unclear and all in German! 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

INNSBRUCK - Very nice experience, a zoo with a beautiful view of Innsbruck. Do without hesitation and even more so if you have children who will take great pleasure in seeing the animals or looking for them in their enclosure.

Parking fee payment really bad - We actually found the zoo itself nice. It was just a bit confusing because you couldn't really see a circular path. The enclosures were great and well-kept. But now comes the thing: What didn't work at all was paying for the parking. There were only parking machines where you could only put coins in. Hello, we live in the 21st century. I thought Germany was already poorly developed. Unfortunately we only had €2 left in coins and got a parking ticket. The parking ticket was valid until 1:58 p.m. We hurried to the zoo so that we didn't go too far over the time limit. We got to the car at 2:12 p.m. Unfortunately 14 minutes late. There was of course a ticket on the windshield wiper with a €25 fine. You really have to have waited until the time runs out. That's what I call a rip-off! Unfortunately it doesn't work at all. You can pay with a card or app everywhere. It's probably a win-win situation for the zoo and the city of Innsbruck.

animal cruelty - The animals look so sad. Especially the bear and the wolves, which are kept in a tiny enclosure and always run in the same little circle. It breaks my heart.

Front office very rude - We didn't enter due to the enormous rudeness of the blonde at the front office, too stressed by her job. Too bad for our son. Entrance is very expensive even with a welcome card
