Upon reaching Badami, enjoy brunch (at your own cost) at a local eatery. Following brunch, begin the exploration of the Cave Temples. These caves are nestled on sandstone hills encircling Lake Agastya. There are four interconnected cave temples accessible via stairways. The first cave temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, the second and third to the Hindu God Vishnu, and the fourth to Lord Mahavira, the founder of Jainism. After visiting the cave temples, explore the nearby Banashankari temple, which dates back to the 7th century A.D.
- Aihole - Proceed to the historic site of Aihole, located 20 miles from Badami, with a drive time of about an hour. Aihole boasts over 120 stone and cave temples dating from the 4th to the 12th century A.D. Approximately 100 of these temples are dedicated to Hindu Gods, while the rest are Jain or Buddhist. Ascend Meguti Hill to visit the ancient Jain temple. Then, explore the 6th-century rock-cut Hindu temple of Ravana Phadi, where remnants of exquisite ceiling paintings and remarkable sculptures can be admired. After visiting the Ravana Phadi cave temple, explore several other ancient temples in the area before continuing to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pattadakal.
- Group of Monuments in Pattadakal - The drive from Aihole to Pattadakal takes about 30 minutes. The temples in Pattadakal showcase the pinnacle of Chalukyan architecture, blending North Indian Nagara and South Indian Dravidian styles. There are nine Hindu temples, with the Temple of Virupaksha being the most notable. Built in the 8th century A.D. by Queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate her husband’s triumph over the Pallava Kings of South India, the temple features intricate carvings, inscriptions, and numerous beautiful sculptures of Hindu Gods. Pattadakal also houses a Jain sanctuary.
At the conclusion of the tour, guests will be driven back to Hospet and returned to their hotel.
