Visit in the morning when the weather is ideal for climbing the 360 steps one way. Originally built in the 12th century, the Kakatiya Fort of Hindu rulers is located 12 kilometers from the city. Clap your hands at the entrance for an acoustic surprise. Enjoy the captivating views from Baradari, which stands 400 feet above the plains, and explore the royal necropolis. The outer wall stretches 8 kilometers, featuring 87 semi-circular bastions and 8 gates. In 1687, the fort fell to Aurangzeb’s forces through treachery and was later used as a prison by the Nizams. The legendary treasure, including the Koh-i-noor diamond, was looted. The fort is constructed with massive blocks of cut stone integrated with natural granite outcrops, and includes several buildings such as living quarters, treasury, harems, mosques, gardens, baths, and barracks. The Royal Necropolis is located northwest of the fort, accessible through the Banjara Gate. Mostly from the Qutub Shahi period, the large tombs each have their own mosques. The tombs of Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah and Kulsum Begum are particularly worth visiting. The sound and light show inside the fort is considered the best in India.
