Temple of Karnak - The largest of Luxor’s temples, Karnak Temple was one of the most sacred sites in ancient Egypt. It marked the ascendancy of Thebes (present-day Luxor) as the capital of the New Kingdom, with construction beginning in the 16th century BC. Most subsequent rulers tinkered with the complex so it represents a great crash course in different pharaonic styles. The major site here is the Temple of Amon, the largest place of worship ever constructed. There the Great Hypostyle Hall, which was once roofed, dwarf’s visitors with its dozens of colossal columns reaching 25 yards (23 meters) into the sky.
Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - Funerary temple, also known as the Djoser-Djeseru, sits at the base of limestone cliffs in Deir el-Bahri, the temple considered a memorial temple that honors Queen Hatshepsut, and one of the incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt, dedicated to Amon-Ra, the sun god. Designed by an architect named Senemut, this mortuary temple seems like resembles the classical Greek architecture of 1,000 years later. Within its precincts, you’ll see sun court, chapel, and sanctuary. Temple reliefs depict the tale of the divine birth of Hatshepsut and trade expeditions to the Land of Punt “a reference to modern Somalia or the Arabian Peninsula”.
Valley of the Kings - This desert valley contains the ancient burial ground of many Egyptian pharaohs. Among over 60 royal tombs is the famous Tomb of Tutankhamen that was found in pristine condition.
Colossi of Memnon - Standing nearly 60 feet (18 meters) above the desert plain, the two faceless statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III are often the first monuments you’ll see when visiting Luxor’s West Bank. Each of the two Colossi was cut from a single block of stone.

Great day - A very long, but very enjoyable day. The driver was lovely and our private guide, Mahmoud, was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and friendly - he tried to ensure everything went very smoothly from start to finish. He gave us guidance to avoid the many sellers in the bazaars on the way to and from the sites, and also warned us about the 'helpers' who will try and take photos for you and then demand money. Karnak was great - got there early in the mornings and given plenty of info and time to look around. The valley of the kings was really interesting but the tombs themselves were hot and stuffy, besides very steep ramps down into the bottom. After visiting Hatshepsut's temple we had a lovely meal in a restaurant by the Colossi of Memnon. I was very grateful we had Mahmoud and it was all organised for us.
