Monte Alto is a nature reserve located 480
880 meters above sea level. It belongs to the Nosara Protected Zone which serves the combined purpose of protecting nature and wildlife along with the important water resources of the headwaters of the Rio Nosara.
Today the reserve covers 924 hectares of low mountain moist forest which is in transition to humid forest. Small wildcats and many other animals roam the thickets and scientists discovered yet unknown species of plants.

Bird lovers might be interested to know that more than 200 species of birds are found in the reserve.
Monte Alto is a great destination for nature lovers and eco-tourists who can learn about the intricacies of the jungle on guided tours.

  • I recommending bring a walking stick because trail are irregular and slippery.

Private Bird Watching in Palo Verde N. P. - My husband and I arranged an early morning of bird watching with Wilmar Retena of Guanacaste Adventure Tours - the company is NOT closed. He also transferred us from inland hacienda to our beach hotel. He was an excellent guide and also shared much about info about Costa Rica on the drive to and from the park. We were the 1st boat on the river and the boat driver was excellent. This helped us to see more species of birds as well as other animals. After birding and boating, we enjoyed an excellent breakfast at a true Costa Rican restaurant with two ladies cooking just for us! Definitely a highlight of our trip to Costa Rica!

Disappointing besides the rainy day. - This tour did not prove its worth because the area requires experienced hikers on narrow and high trails. They should advise persons to bring hiking shoes and a walking stick. It rained that day so the birding was not favorable, however, despite that event, the area did not seem to have an abundance of birds. We saw more birds on our resort grounds which were surrounded by a natural reserve. Monte Alto is 'alto' so hiking the area requires concentration & not an easy bird watching experience.
