Highlights
  • Traditional Japanese Archery Experience “SHA-RAKU” - Kyudo is a Japanese martial art based on shooting an arrow from a Japanese bow to a target to reach a complete focus of mind and body. The main difference of kyudo and western archery is that, in kyudo, every movement follows a traditional routine that pays respect to the equipment and to the opponent. You will come to the archery range and dress in an authentic kyudo uniform, which will include dogi—the upper wear—and hakama—the lower wear. I’ll give a brief explanation about the art of kyudo as well as instructions and demonstrations. With the knowledge you’ll gain, you will learn to shoot arrows at the target. You’ll also understand the fun and challenging aspect of the sport, particularly while wearing the traditional hakama and armor. Usually in kyudo, you are not allowed to pull the arrow unless you master the basics. But during our lesson, you will be able to enjoy the real kyudo experience even as a complete beginner. It will be a great time if you are looking for a nice photo or movie to show to your friends.

Super fun experience - Great experience! Loved hearing about the history and conduct of this sport, and the lesson was detailed and logical. I recommend the instructor provide a little more detail however on where and how to aim - I didn’t figure that out fully until midway through. Highly recommend though and it was fun wearing the traditional outfits!!

Informative and fun for new and experienced archers alike - The experience was a short but very entertaining and informative one. We first learned briefly about the history and style of traditional Japanese archery, before going through a comprehensive tutorial, and then getting to try it out ourselves. The technique is very particular and our guide was very careful to make sure that we followed it closely; as a left-handed person, it was especially difficult since there were only right-handed options (as is the case historically), yet it was still a very fun experience nonetheless. Whether you've never shot a bow before or have extensive archery experience, I believe this activity has a lot to offer and is a great way to spend an hour getting in touch with a more traditional side of Japanese culture.

Target practice - Had a blast with the wife! The host was patient with my wife's inability to tell her left from her right, and that led to some good laughs. He didn't speak English super well, but he made up for it with Google translate. Honestly, we had no problems. Fun time all in all!

Great fun - We decided to do this activity as a bit of fun in the midst of the somberness that can be the sites of Hiroshima. It’s located conveniently to the peace park so we were able to do the archery as well as explore the peace park!
