Boarding begins at 10:00 AM, with departure at 10:15 AM, and arrival in Hill City around 11:15 AM. The 1880 Train offers a one-hour, narrated 10-mile journey between Hill City and Keystone. Passengers enjoy views of Harney Peak, mining camps, and partake in delightful old-fashioned fun. The train follows the original path of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, established in the late 1880s to serve the mines and mills between Hill City and Keystone. The Black Hills Central Railroad, the nation’s oldest continuously operating tour railroad, runs three steam and two diesel engines throughout the season. One of their steam engines is nearly a century old!
- Hill City - Enjoy lunch at one of the recommended restaurants in Hill City. Afterwards, explore the shops, visit the Black Hills Natural History Museum (featuring amazing dinosaur fossils), or check out the new South Dakota Train Museum near the depot. Then, head to Rapid City. If desired, stop at any or all of the three winery tasting rooms outside Hill City on the return trip. The journey back to the hotel can be via Highway 16 or past Pactola Lake and down Highway 44. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable day in both towns, with a pleasant and scenic train ride in between.
