Exploring the Soul of Sake: A Journey Through Higashihiroshima’s KAMOSU TABI Wellness Tour
Drawn by the allure of one of Japan’s top sake brewing regions, I embarked on the KAMOSU TABI Wellness Tour in Higashihiroshima. Join me as I explore the rich traditions, nature, and community that define this unique experience.
A Journey Through the Heart of Sake Brewing
As I embarked on the KAMOSU TABI Wellness Tour in Higashihiroshima, I was filled with anticipation. This region, known as one of Japan’s top three sake brewing areas, promised a unique blend of tradition, nature, and community. My journey began at the foot of Mt. Ryuo, where the rainwater takes over 15 years to transform into mineral-rich water, perfect for sake brewing. This connection with nature is an essential aspect of the art of sake brewing, and I felt it deeply as I traced the source of this renowned water.
The tour guides, Shiori San and Noa San, were exceptional in their hospitality and knowledge. They guided us through the intricate process of sake making, explaining each step in detail. Their passion for sake was infectious, and I found myself immersed in the history and tradition that surrounds this ancient craft. The experience was not just educational but also deeply spiritual, as I felt a connection with the land and the people who have dedicated their lives to this art.
The Charm of Saijo’s Sake District
Walking along Saijo’s Sakagura-dori Street, I was transported back in time. This charming historical district, known as “the Sake Capital Saijo,” is lined with seven breweries, each with its unique story and tradition. The air was filled with the rich aroma of sake, and the sight of the traditional wooden buildings added to the ambiance.
At the Kamotsuru Sake Brewery, I had the opportunity to taste some of the finest sake in the region. The flavors were exquisite, each sip telling a story of the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication that goes into every bottle. The tasting was accompanied by a video explaining the sake-making process, further enhancing my appreciation for this ancient art.
Lunch at Kuradokoro TARU was a delightful experience, with a menu crafted from the blessings of the sea and mountains, paired with the traditionally refined sake of Saijo. The meal was a celebration of the region’s abundant resources and culinary expertise, leaving me with a sense of gratitude and fulfillment.
Meeting the Master Brewer
The highlight of the tour was meeting Soichiro Tsuka, the ninth generation Toji of Akitsu’s Tsuka Sake Brewery. His passion for sake was evident as he shared stories of his family’s legacy and the connections between the people who care about sake. Listening to Suka San, I felt the power of tradition and the importance of preserving this cultural heritage.
The tour concluded with a visit to Akitsucho Mitsu, a town nurtured by the mild climate of the Seto Inland Sea. Known as the “birthplace of the Toji,” Akitsu is filled with the passion and dedication of those who have contributed to Hiroshima’s sake. The experience left me with a profound appreciation for the art of sake brewing and the people who keep this tradition alive.
The KAMOSU TABI Wellness Tour was more than just a journey through sake breweries; it was a journey through history, culture, and community. It was a reminder of the connections that bind us to the land and to each other, and a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese sake.
