Additional Information

The Military Fort of San Juan de Ulua is one of the most important historical monuments of the city built on an islet to protect ships from bad weather and to defend the port from attacks by pirates and freebooters, over time it became the fortress that housed contingents and later it was a prison.

Currently, it was reopened as the Veracruz Archaeological Museum, where archaeological pieces from the Gulf of Mexico region are gathered, in addition to knowing the history of the Fort, during your visit you can also tour and learn about the architecture of this important monument.

San Juan de Ulua is the name of a small island in Mexico where the old fortress and the former port (with the same name) are located. The construction of the fortress was planned by the Spaniards under the command of Hernan Cortes on April 22, 1519, in the context of the conquest of America and the pirate and corsair attacks of the time against Spain.

Not worth the visit - It was a poor experience. We paid 95 pesos to get in (not expensive at all) but half of the place was closed. They simply don’t have information about anything anywhere. If there are 2 boards with some explanation (in bad conditions) that’s it It looks abandoned The toilet is a disaster I’m sad to accept that I was excited about the visit and got very disappointed about it
