He became the patron saint during the Turkish occupation. Tradition recounts that on Easter 1826, while Christians were attending the Resurrection service, a group of Muslims planned a massacre, which was averted by the intervention of an old cavalry officer. This horseman resembled the Turkish leader, Ayan Aga, who calmed the situation and prevented the massacre. The Christians believed this mysterious horseman was a miraculous appearance of Saint Minas, rather than Ayan Aga.
