Great Views from Fort - Having been shocked by the price for entry at Chesters Fort £11 odd, very pleased to visit Housesteads where NT members enter free! Although parking is £4. It’s a long walk up to the fort (for those less able there is an alternative place to park but still some climbing to see the ruins). In the visitor centre/museum there is a short film to view & you can by cold drinks & ice cream (main cafe at start). Get some good views of Hadrian’s wall beyond.

Well Preserved - Housesteads Roman Fort is owned by the National Trust (NT) but administered by English Heritage (EH) and entrance is free if you a member of either organisation. Car parking however is payable to the Northumberland National Park at £3.00 for two hours and £2 for every additional hour thereafter. The parking fee is payable on exit or you can pay up to 48-hours later (see web-address on the parking meter for details). From the car park it is quite a walk up hill to the Fort but it's well worth the effort. The site is well interpenetrated with information boards dotted around the site. Don't miss the famous Housesteads latrine; probably the best multi seat latrine in Britain! There are also some great views across and along Hadrian's Wall A small Museum and shop are adjacent to the site, which is run by EH.

It`s a long way up. - Long and steep walk up to the Roman fort, not for the infirm. The fort itself is basically just about similar to a lot of other forts. Coach party of children when I was there and they were climbing all over the walls and making lots of noise as children do.
