On Thursday night, a quaint art gallery in Ha Noi was packed with enthusiasts of the traditional Vietnamese ca tru ceremonial singing. The Ca Tru Thang Long (Thang long is an ancient name of Ha noi capital) traditional group organised the event titled ‘Ca Tru – Preserve for Our Next Generation’. The band consists of Nguyen Thi Chuc, an 83-year-old singer, 88-year-old Nguyen Phu De who plays dan day (a long-necked lute-like musical instrument with three silk strings and 10 frets), and their trainee, singer Pham Thi Hue. Tran Van Khe, a renowned Professor of Ethnomusicology, described the event as a vibrant way of conserving this unique folk genre, an integral part of our cultural legacy. Hue pointed out various inspirations for establishing the band – it serves as a platform for them to practice, exchange learning and bring the genre to the forefront for audiences.
