• San Benito Ale House - This historic inn, built in 1905, is conveniently located a mile from both Half Moon Bay State Beach and the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail. A fire nearly destroyed the building a few years ago.
• It’s Italia - Explore the historic downtown and its notable attractions and haunts. Pass by San Benito House, It’s Italia, and other downtown restaurants and eclectic boutique shops.
• Jail - Visit the historic Half Moon Bay Jail. Before its construction, lawbreakers were detained in a wooden shed in a judge’s backyard, which also served as the town’s courthouse. The poor conditions led the town’s newspaper to advocate for a new jail, resulting in the 1919 construction of the Half Moon Bay Jail, now a historical museum.

The California Gold Rush brought ambitious settlers to the town, but it also attracted troublemakers.

Primarily used as a sheriff’s office and holding cell, the Jail operated until the 1960s, accommodating overnight bookings and drunken revelers, while more dangerous criminals were transferred to the county jail in Redwood City. By the 1970s, the Jail became the site for the County’s Mental Health Services office before being handed over to the city.

• Half Moon Bay - Half Moon Bay City Hall, circa 1922, resembles a bank because it once was. Initially the Bank of Half Moon Bay, it later became the Bank of Italy and then Bank of America. Located at 501 Main Street.

• Mavericks Beach - Discover Mavericks, a renowned big wave surf spot in Half Moon Bay, California, discovered in the late 1960s. It gained fame in the early 1990s through a Surfer Magazine photo. Named after a dog called Maverick, the location hosts some of the world’s largest waves and prestigious surf contests. Mavericks remains an iconic and challenging destination for seasoned surfers.

Mavericks gained global recognition for its massive waves, sometimes exceeding 50 feet, making it a top destination for the world’s best big wave surfers. In 1999, Mavericks held its inaugural official big wave surf contest, which continues today as one of the most prestigious competitions in the surfing world.

Over the years, Mavericks has become synonymous with big wave surfing in California and remains an iconic and challenging spot for experienced surfers to test their skills against nature’s formidable power.
