Charming Old Ship - Halong bay is so beautiful. Every view from the ship is breath taking. The sunset was purple. The ship is an old wooden ship that has seen better days. It is definitely charming and could use some maintenance. The food was okay and the staff is very attentive and helpful. We were only on the ship for one night and I felt it was a good introduction to Halong Bay. The activities were rushed because we were only there one night. It might be a better trip with two nights.

FAKE CRUISE - ... The word cruise was the trigger. The desire to crisscross the bay, to cross the islands, from daybreak to night. Departure was supposed to be noon, return the next hour. First observation: we are piled like cattle in a boat with uncomfortable wooden benches. A crossing of almost an hour, to reach a dock occupied by customs officers in front of whom we are asked to put on life jackets. Then board the boat "Amanda". Briefing in the restaurant, quick brunch buffet. We settle in a large “deluxe” room at the back of the boat. Very quickly the engines surprise us. Everything vibrates, everything trembles, the sound of engines is everywhere, the smell of diesel too. The ship is traveling two nautical miles. Looks like he doesn’t know where to put himself. We anchor in three different places, then we leave for a few meters. It is not yet a cruise but circles in the water. Under the sound of engines. We are not interested in "activities": tai chi on deck, four employees dressed in traditional costumes are photographed with passengers. The aperitif on the deck is masochistic. It's too cold. We were kept a table at the restaurant, the one we occupied at the first brunch. We were told to come by 7 PM. We arrive at 6.30 PM and in front of us, an employee rips our room number from our table to give to another couple. A story of Bakchiche?? She puts us at a table in the center of the restaurant. The meal is that of a school canteen: it is bland, bad and cold. The service is surreal: people who have never learned the slightest rules of catering. There is heating only in the restaurant. It's over 30 degrees. Back in our room, there is only 15° and no heating, no extra blankets. The boat came to rest a few meters from its departure. The night is quiet, lit by other tourist boats, cold. Breakfast at 6.30 AM under the noise of engines that move the boat a few hundred meters. You can see a few islands. That’s already it. In the distance, the city of Halong. We're a few blocks away. Breakfast will be preceded by a series of calls to prepare us to leave the boat. We're ringing our doorbell, the luggage needs to be taken out. It is not 7 PM. Breakfast is rushed. It is used to establish check-outs and to pay any charges. We are again invited to rush in the boat that is to take us back to the dock. We are not far away (an hour again). The cruise lasted a total of just two hours. The meals were those of a simple canteen. No gastronomy, far from it. We disembark around 11 AM on the departure platform. Let me be frank: these fake cruise organizers and their floating wrecks sully the image of Viet Nam! They're crooks. Only the pictures they post on their ads are enticing. The reality is quite different. We look at the following passengers who are being rushed to board as we were a few hours earlier. We have just given more money to these organizers than in eight days of a star hotel in Hanoi. What's wrong? To be cold, hungry and treated like cattle. Vietnamese tourism deserves better than these hustlers!

Do not book with this cruise - Extremely disappointed, rated 5 star on other websites we were downgraded at last minute to a three star cruise or had option to cancel the whole trip . We couldn’t cancel due to time and accommodation challenges so we only got a refund of around 75 dollar refund for a family of five which was negligible to what we paid for the entire cruise . Downgraded package did not match refunded amount . There was no cooking class or tai chi class . The downgraded cruise boat had good food but guide did not speak English very well, rooms were not up to standard , s beeping sound went on the whole night and some passengers had to sleep outdoors due to fumes in the room . No proper itinerary , no good information about transit trip , very chaotic and confused . Do not book with this cruise line , manager or owner shows very little interest in her customers. Only thing good was the scenery .

Not recommended - poor management of cancellation due to bad weather - Not impressed with Amanda cruise company at all, terrible way to handle a cancellation due to weather. After being picked up in a full cramped bus with luggage through the aisle, Amanda cruise company emailed us on the way to Halong Bay, informing that no ships were able to leave the port due to bad weather. Despite knowing this by 10:30am, they still made us stay on the bus and go all the way to Halong bay, wait around for an unnecessarily long 2hr lunch with average food on a small boat in the harbor (not the Luxury boat we booked) before bussing us back to Hanoi, finally returning at 6:30pm. They had the audacity to charge 45USD per person for this forced lunch and bus trip instead of the full refund that was initially offered in their email. This wasted a whole day of our holiday which we could have enjoyed back in Hanoi as soon as Amanda cruise company knew we were unable to sail that day. Communication and organization of busses and taxi in Hanoi from Amanda cruise was terrible, I will not be re-booking with them when I return to Vietnam.
