From RV to V’Spirit: A Journey Through Lan Ha Bay
Trading the open road for the open sea, I embarked on a three-day cruise through Vietnam’s Lan Ha Bay. Join me as I reflect on the adventure, the beauty of the bay, and the memories that will last a lifetime.
Setting Sail on Lan Ha Bay
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips across the American Midwest, I have always been drawn to the open road and the stories that unfold along the way. But this time, my husband and I decided to trade our RV for a cruise ship and explore the waters of Vietnam’s Lan Ha Bay. The allure of a three-day adventure on the V’Spirit Cruise was too tempting to resist, and it promised a journey through less-traveled waters, much like the backroads I adore.
Our journey began in Hanoi, where we were picked up and whisked away to Tuan Chau International Harbor. The anticipation built as we boarded a feeder vessel, guided by the ever-attentive Frankie, who ensured everyone was accounted for. As we approached the V’Spirit, our home for the next two nights, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the road trips of my youth, where each new destination held the promise of discovery.
Once on board, we were treated to a buffet-style lunch at The Dawn Restaurant. The variety of dishes catered to all tastes, and the staff’s attentiveness reminded me of the small-town diners where the waitstaff knew your name and your favorite order. After lunch, we settled into our cozy cabin, our luggage already waiting for us, much like the familiar comfort of our RV.
Adventures on the Water
The first day of our cruise was filled with activities that brought us closer to the natural beauty of Lan Ha Bay. We donned our swimsuits and embarked on a kayaking trip through the caves, a gentle introduction to the wonders of the bay. The experience was reminiscent of exploring hidden trails and discovering secret spots along the highways back home.
As the sun began to set, we returned to the ship for a swim in the sea, an inflatable pool providing a playful touch. Dinner that evening was a feast for the senses, accompanied by the melodies of local musicians. The atmosphere was lively, with adults enjoying a few beers and karaoke, while the children tried their hand at squid fishing. It was a scene that could have easily been set in a small-town festival, where the community comes together to celebrate.
The second day began with a Tai Chi session on the sundeck, a peaceful way to greet the morning. We then set off on a day cruise to a local village, choosing to cycle the 6km route. The ride was a journey through time, much like the scenic routes I cherish, where every turn reveals a new story. After a brief kayaking session and some beach time, we returned to the ship for more swimming and a delightful dinner.
A Fond Farewell
Our final day on the V’Spirit began with a morning kayak, a last chance to soak in the beauty of the bay. We then participated in a cooking class, learning to make Vietnamese fresh spring rolls. It was a fitting end to our adventure, much like the roadside diners where I learned to appreciate the art of a well-made meal.
As we disembarked and made our way back to Hanoi, I reflected on the memories we had created. The Lan Ha Bay Cruise was a journey that mirrored the road trips of my past, filled with discovery, connection, and the simple joy of the open road—or in this case, the open sea. It was a reminder that adventure can be found in many forms, and that the stories we collect along the way are what truly make the journey worthwhile.
For those seeking a unique adventure, I highly recommend the Lan Ha Bay Cruise—a voyage that will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
