Highlights
  • Seokguram - (Gyeongju UNESCO itinerary)
Seokguram is an artificial grotto constructed of granite that comprises an antechamber, a corridor and a main rotunda. It enshrines a monumental statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha looking out to sea with his left hand in dhyana mudra, the mudra of concentration, and his right hand in bhumisparsa mudra, the earth-touching mudra position. Together with the portrayals of devas, bodhisattvas and disciples, sculpted in high and low relief on the surrounding walls, the statues are considered to be a masterpiece of East Asian Buddhist art. The domed ceiling of the rotunda and the entrance corridor employed an innovative construction technique that involved the use of more than 360 stone slabs.

Additional Information

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom, which was ruled by 56 dynasties for about 1,000 years before its fall. It’s a crucial historical city in Korea, offering a view into the grandeur of the Silla’s Buddhist culture. During its zenith, the kingdom engaged actively in trade and cultural exchanges with nations such as China, Japan, India, and the Middle East, giving insight into the ancient Korean way of life, including their philosophy, culture, and science.

Gyeongju itself is like an open-air museum without walls, where visitors can explore places like the UNESCO-listed Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, as well as the Daereungwon Cheonmachong - the tomb complex of Silla’s royalty and nobility. There are additional sites to visit, alongside the chance to experience traditional Silla crafts at a local pottery village, sample local brews at the Gyeongju traditional rice winery, and savor regional cuisine during your tour!

Awesome Tour Guide - Frank Yi was our tour guide for this tour guide on the trip to South Korea . We+ are from Hawaii and this was a "mini" honeymoon" for my wife and I after we both retried from our jobs in June 2023. We had a personalized trip with only our guide and us. Frank was a very friendly and well informed and took us to the King's Tombs, The Choi estate, the Ceramic shop and the UNCEO site # 24 the Buddha and the grotto. This was an experience beyond belief and it was awesome. I highly recommend Frank as an excellent tour guide and perfect access.
