Situated in the subterranean level of Cerro del Carmen and nestled within the confines of Guayaquil’s historic district, the General Cemetery stands as a repository of rich heritage from whichever perspective one chooses to view it. The cemetery is the final resting place for former presidents and vice presidents of Ecuador, as well as the heroes of the Independence of October 9, 1820. It is also a bastion of artistic expression, particularly at Entrance #3, which is the primary route for visitors.

In 2011, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage expanded its designation of the General Cemetery of Guayaquil as a Cultural Heritage of Ecuador to encompass the entire cemetery grounds.
