Tikal - The guide will provide detailed information throughout the walk and lead visitors to the most significant squares, offering insights into the Mayan civilization.
The Tikal archaeological site boasts around 5,000 pre-Hispanic structures spread over an area of about 16 km², with only 15% restored and open for exploration.
The residential area of Tikal spans approximately 60 km², much of which remains uncleared, unmapped, and unexcavated. This city was a major Mayan capital that controlled a vast region during the Classic period.
- Great Plaza - The Great Plaza of Tikal and its surroundings are the highlights of Tikal, featuring central acropolises that serve as residential or administrative complexes, along with a smaller Mayan ball court.
In the northern area, a row of sculpted stelae and altars contains much of Tikal’s dynastic history. Additionally, there are ceremonial buildings that served as mausoleums for ruling families.
In the main square, visitors can climb Temple 2 or the masks, which stand 38 meters high, to view the Temple of the Great Jaguar.
The impressive Temple of the Great Jaguar, standing 45 meters tall, is located just east in the large square and is an iconic symbol of Tikal.
-
Temple I - Known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar or Temple I, this structure served as a ceremonial and ritual site, considered a gateway to the underworld. The remains of Ruler Hasaw Chaan Kawil were discovered within this construction.
-
Tikal Temple III - The Temple of the High Priest, or Temple III, is a funeral-ceremonial temple built in 810 AD. It is part of the largest city of the late Classic Mayan period, with construction overseen by King Nu Bak Chak II, also known as “Dark Sun.”
-
Temple IV - Constructed around 741 AD to honor the reign of the 27th king of the Tikal dynasty, Yik’in Chan K’awiil, Temple IV may have been built posthumously as his burial temple. Archaeologists believe Yik’in Chan K’awiil’s tomb remains undiscovered beneath the temple. The sanctuary at the top faces east towards the site’s core, with Temple III directly in front and Temples I and II visible.
-
Lost World - The Lost World is the largest ceremonial complex from the preclassic era of Tikal. Organized as a large astronomical complex (“Set E”), it includes a pyramid aligned with an eastward platform forming the base for three temples. The Lost World complex underwent several reconstructions throughout its history. By the 250s-300s AD, its architectural style was influenced by Teotihuacán in the Valley of Mexico, incorporating the slope-board style. During the Early Classic period (c. 250–600), the Lost World became one of the city’s two focal points, alongside the North Acropolis. From 250 to 378 AD, it may have served as a royal necropolis. The Lost World complex was named by archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania.
