Additional Information

It’s simply a matter of trekking 4 miles through the forest-laden emblem of Saint Lucia - namely, along a serpentine path that ascends the steep, tropical rainforest gradients of a volcanic peak standing at 2,619 feet. Intermittently, the foliage parts to unveil stunning panoramas of the verdant island and the strikingly azure sea of the Caribbean. Procuring a guide is obligatory, yet they are a fount of insight. The caverns once served as havens for insurgent fighters during the Brigand war, flamboyant avian species, and luxuriant flora that features immense gommiers (crafted into canoes), the diminutive swizzlestick tree (from which cocktail stirrers are fashioned) and ‘peeling tourists’ - trees with fissured brown rinds that eerily resemble the appearance of someone who has dozed off under the sun’s rays without protective sunscreen.

The best guided tour option for sure - Great trip - Danny was very nice and flexible. He will pick you up from anywhere - just tell him in advance and he will sort it. This trip has specific guides they use and they are all great. Very friendly and encouraging and knowledgeable. We loved this hike even though it was tough. Would definitely recommend to anyone and wouldn’t go elsewhere for the Gros Piton hike trip. The best guided tour for this hike for sure.

Challenging Hike - Amazing views and a great feeling of accomplishment at the top. It’s definitely not for everyone. The first half is hiking, the second half is very steep and climbing over rocks. The handrails are very helpful going up and down. Spend the extra $5 for the trekking pole, it’ll save your legs.

Hikeup Gros Piton, St. Lucia - The hike was definitely a challenge but well worth it. The views from the top were amazing! Our guide was very kind and the Tour company, St Lucia Best Experience Tours was fantastic!! They communicated very well everything we needed to know. Contacted us prior to the hike day and made sure all details were taken care of. Our driver Aldan was the best!!

Exhilarating, challenging hike, rewarded by spectacular vistas - This was a great experience! Note that the hike is challenging, so be prepared. Wear sturdy hiking/trail running shoes and make sure to have plenty of water and snacks. Part of the hike is shaded, and some in full sun, so it does get very warm. recommend an early start. A walking stick/hiking pole also helpful - esp. on the way down. This is a rocky and, at times, steep trail. The way up is a cardio workout, down is easier on the lungs but tricky for 50+ year old knees, so the hiking pole and focussed attention were a must. We had a 6am pick up (from a hotel in the north), and set out with our guide, Kaiser, just after 8am. Including a few stops for photos and rests to refuel, we were back at the base by about 12:30. Can’t say enough good things about Kaiser! Very patient and skilled guide. Our driver, Dannyboy, was equally impressive. Very knowledgeable, sharing many fun facts and history of Saint Lucia throughout the drive and skillfully navigating the winding roads. Arrived right on time for pick up and was charming throughout. Highly recommend this excursion for fit individuals!

Recommended but only if you are in really good shape/good cardio health - Background: I am 59 years old and before this "hike", I thought I was in good shape. This is not for you if you are not in shape and comfortable hiking on rocks and steep inclines pretty much the entire way. From the beginning, you are climbing on big rocks almost the whole way (at least up half way - I did not make it to the top!) I hear the 2nd half is even harder than the first half. We cut the hike short halfway up - we had a spa appointment that afternoon, but I also had no interest in turning a good hearty hike into a trip to the hospital. Tips: -wear hiking boots and be in good cardio health. I workout three times a week and swim frequently, and I was huffing and puffing most of the way (I will be reviewing my workout plan)... - it's okay to stop halfway if you are worried about your safety or health. It's a great experience, but don't kill yourself to get to the top. I hear the view isn't any better then the halfway point. - although getting back down is easier, it's also probably easier to twist or break an ankle on the steep decline. Be careful and take it easy on the way down. - there are cats all over the place. They are really cute, but someone needs to start a TNR program around there. If you are cat lover, bring a can or two of cat food - you will have little friends for life :) - buy yourself and your guide some ice cream at the bottom. It is delicious and really hits the spot after a hard workout. I recommend it.

Memorable but Costly - The hike was fantastic, and the guide was very helpful. It was a memorable experience overall. However, if I were to do it again, I would arrange for the hotel to provide a shuttle service, which would cost a fraction of the price. The total for two people to hike and transportation was $290. I guess it depends on where you need to be picked up, but for us, we were only 10 minutes from the Piton, so the $190 for the shuttle service is steep.
