• St. Paul’s Cathedral - Gather at the West end of St. Paul’s Cathedral near the impressive stairs. This architectural wonder was constructed by Sir Christopher Wren following the Great Fire of 1666. The fire devastated much of medieval London, but several nearby sites survived. Sir Christopher’s influence extends to other buildings on our tour, so understanding his work and pre-1666 London is essential. It’s an 18-minute walk to St. Bart’s.
• William Wallace Memorial - En route to St. Bart’s Priory, we’ll pause at the memorial dedicated to William Wallace, the Scottish hero who championed Scottish independence.
• Church of St. Bartholomew the Great - The Church of St. Bartholomew-the-Great, a 12th-century treasure, withstood the Great Fire of 1666, the Reformation, Civil War, and The Blitz of WWII. The eastern side showcases magnificent arches, columns, and tombs. As an early Norman church, it offers a valuable comparison to other churches from later medieval periods.
• Newgate Street - We’ll explore the walls of Medieval London and visit Newgate, one of the city’s historic entry points, later renowned as a prison. It’s the site of the Old Bailey (London Criminal Court), which remains in use today.
• Temple Church - Fans of The Da Vinci Code will recognize the Knights Templar, the wealthy and enigmatic medieval monk-knights. They constructed this church in the 12th century, which survived the Great Fire, though Victorian restorers caused significant damage. Its remarkable stone vaulted ceiling endured The Blitz, despite surrounding bombings. There’s a fascinating connection here to the Founding Fathers of the United States, making it a must-see!
