These magnificent structures were the final resting places for kings of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed for King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), while the other two were built for Khafre and Menkaure, his son and grandson. Khufu’s pyramid is the oldest and largest of the three, and no taller building was constructed for another 3,800 years! Afterward, visit the Valley Temple, where priests mummified King Chephre’s body.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The Great Pyramid of Giza is an iconic symbol of Egypt and the last of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. Situated on the Giza plateau near modern Cairo, it was built over twenty years during King Khufu’s reign (2589-2566 BCE, also known as Cheops) of the 4th Dynasty.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - The second-largest pyramid at Giza and in Egypt was constructed for Khafre, the third pharaoh of the 4th Dynasty during the Old Kingdom Period of Ancient Egypt around 2540 BC. Khafre, also known by the Greek name Chephren, was the son of Khufu, the builder of the Great Pyramid, and the grandson of Sneferu, another notable builder of Ancient Egypt.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid chambers are more intricate than those of Khafre, featuring a chamber with decorative panels and another with six large niches. The burial chamber is lined with massive granite blocks. His black stone sarcophagus, also adorned with niched panels, was found inside but was lost at sea in 1838 while being transported to England.
- Great Sphinx - A must-visit site for stunning photos, the Great Sphinx is a mythical creature with a lion’s body and a human head, a significant image in Egyptian and Greek art and legend.
- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Next, visit the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (EMC), the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, housing over 170,000 artifacts. It boasts the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities in the world. The museum’s exhibits cover the Pre-Dynastic Period to the Graeco-Roman Era (c. 5500 BC - AD 364).
- Khan Al-Khalili - Originally established on the site of an old mausoleum, Khan el-Khalili souk has been a trading hub for local and foreign merchants since the 14th century. It is Egypt’s most renowned market.
