- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) in Giza, Egypt, is the largest of the three Giza pyramids and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Constructed around 2600 BC as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu of the Fourth Dynasty, it symbolizes ancient Egyptian civilization and showcases the architectural and engineering prowess of the era.
The Great Pyramid of Cheops reaches a height of approximately 146 meters (481 feet) and held the title of the tallest man-made structure for millennia until the steeple of Old St. Paul’s Cathedral in London was built in 1221 CE. It comprises an estimated 2.3 million limestone blocks, each weighing between 2.5 to 15 tons. The precision in quarrying, transporting, and assembling these massive stones is a testament to ancient engineering skills.
- Pyramid of Menkaure - The Pyramid of Menkaure, also known as Mykerinos, is one of the three pyramids at the Giza site near Cairo, Egypt. Built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom around 2515 BC, it served as the tomb for Pharaoh Menkaure.
Standing at approximately 65 meters (213 feet), it is the smallest of the Giza pyramids. It is believed to have been designed by the architect Hemon, who also contributed to the Pyramid of Khufu.
Constructed from limestone, the pyramid was originally covered in smooth, polished Tura limestone, much of which has been removed, exposing the rougher inner layer. The pyramid includes three smaller pyramids for queen consorts and a mortuary temple adjacent to it.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s Pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Khafre or the Pyramid of Chefren, is a prominent pyramid on the Giza Plateau in Egypt. It is the second largest pyramid, built as a burial tomb for Pharaoh Khafre, the fourth ruler of the Fourth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt.
The Pyramid of Khafre stands at about 136 meters (446 feet) and is constructed from limestone blocks. Although slightly smaller than the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), its location on higher ground makes it appear taller.
A notable feature of Khafre’s Pyramid is the remaining casing stones at its apex, contributing to its distinctive look. Some original casing stones of highly polished white limestone are still visible near the top.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx is located on the east side of the complex. Egyptologists generally agree that the head of the Great Sphinx represents Khafre. Alongside these major monuments are several smaller satellite structures, known as “queens” pyramids, causeways, and valley pyramids.
- Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Saqqara is an expansive ancient burial ground south of Cairo, near Memphis. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Memphis Necropolis. Saqqara is renowned for the Step Pyramid of Djoser, one of Egypt’s earliest pyramid structures, designed by the famed architect Imhotep as the burial complex for Pharaoh Djoser. Other royal tombs, mastabas (rectangular tombs), and temples are also located at Saqqara.
- Memphis and Sakkara - Memphis was the capital of ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom (circa 3100 BCE to 2180 BCE). It was a vital city and a hub of political, cultural, and economic activity. Today, the ancient site of Memphis is an open-air museum featuring various ruins and artifacts. Visitors can explore the remains of temples, statues, and royal tombs, including the colossal statue of Ramses II, known as the Great Colossus of Memphis.
- Pyramid of Teti - The Pyramid of Teti is a smooth-sided pyramid located in the pyramid field at Saqqara, Egypt. It is the second known pyramid to contain pyramid texts.
- Pyramid of Unas - Unas constructed his pyramid between the complexes of Sekhemket and Djoser in North Saqqara. A long causeway was built to connect the valley temple at a nearby lake to the pyramid site.
- Mastaba of Ti - The Mastaba of Ti is a significant archaeological site in Saqqara. Discovered by Auguste Mariette, the mastaba contains two serdabs. The tomb walls depict various scenes of everyday life.
