Breezy pasta adventure - We had an amazing time and met wonderful people. We made two types of pasta and fresh pesto. Definitely going to try making the pasta with chestnut flour at home. Also got some helpful tips for making our pesto the best it could be. You could see the water from the garden and we had a nice breeze on a warm day. The breeze however certainly made things interesting when trying to grate the cheese onto our dishes. We had to be quick and sometimes provide a backstop so as not to let good cheese go to waste.

Lovely experience, learned loads, quiet but hospitable host. - Having met Alessandro at the meeting place, we followed him to his apartment. It is up a lot of steps. Worth it. But be prepared. The young ones had no problem. The less fit of us and older struggle but made it! And worth it! Absolutely loved the small garden full of fruit trees, having both shade and a breeze while overlooking the port. I was feeling sick and really regretted my decision to go at first. But…it was lovely. I learned loads, asked lots of questions. We took turns in doing things as there was 8 people in total. All of whom were lovely and funny and really interesting. Alessandro was a great host! I came to Italy to do a tour of cookery classes along the way. I was deadly serious about learning. It killed me not to make the dough but I got to check the textures of each so that kept me happy as ai understood what the result should be. I did each part of the rest so was delighted with that. What did we do: two pastas, although we did a variation on both of them so technically we learned 4 pasta’s! More than I expected and the gluten free one was a bonus as my kid is gluten free. We rolled and cut 2 types into corzetti, with and without wine. We also mixed Testaroli, gluten and non gluten. This pasta is then fried and cut and boiled. It is spongey and very different to anything I had tasted. We also made the pesto, from the drying of the basil to the finished article. I even learned something about the sizes of pestle and mortar and the affect it has. You live and learn! So the tasting: we started with some bread and bread sticks with some white wine. I wasn’t feeling great so skipped this a little. Then we ate the two pasta’s we made, both served with pesto sauce we had made and each with a different red wine. It was all delicious. I personally wasn’t as enthusiastic as my comrades in arms about the more local testaroli but by the time I was finished, I was a fan. The texture and flavour was so unusual. But who doesn’t love a new food experience!! I can’t wait to get home and try both. The testaroli is especially exciting as it marries well with gluten free flours. We overstayed our welcome and Alexandros wife and kids had to come save him!! But this was only because we were having such a nice time. The breeze was so welcome. Towards the very end, I was sorry I hadn’t taken a light cardigan or jumper as it began to get nippy. When we left, it was a joy to be heading downhill all the way. I did notice a lift close to where we met Alessandro and wonder if that might be a cheats way up. Young or older and fit: no problem. It isn’t far at all but it’s steep enough. Thanks Alessandro for having us and for being so polite about us staying so long. My apologises. It was an absolute reflection of your quiet hospitality,

A wonderful time - We absolutely loved this experience 💚 Alessandro welcomed us into his home and gorgeous rustic garden oasis in the centre of Genoa and shared his first class knowledge of pesto and pasta making. He expertly showed us how to make pesto and two different types of pasta from scratch, and then served it to us with wine in his garden. We met the most wonderful group of fellow guests, who were a delight to dine with. Highly recommended.

Genoa Garden Experience - My family and I were very excited for this experience, but for us it fell flat. There are pros and cons to this so, I'm going to lay them out as such. Pros: -The garden is lovely, quaint and has a wonderful view of the port. -Alessandro opens his home to guests and is very proud of his cooking and culture. -The wine was delicious. -The garden turtles were fun to watch. Our kids loved them! Cons: -We felt as though our host was rushing around and flustered during our experience. -The cooking class felt more like a 'watch me cook' class. -The class was overbooked, so there seemed to be 'too many cooks in the kitchen'. -It ran over the stated time, which isn't always a bad thing, but we didn't sit to eat our pasta dishes until well into the afternoon.
