Setting Sail on a Family Adventure

As a travel writer and a mother of three, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and thrilling for the whole family. Our recent trip to Funchal, Madeira, was no exception. We embarked on the VipDolphins Experience, a luxury whale watching tour that promised an unforgettable adventure on the Atlantic Ocean.

The day began with a warm welcome aboard a sleek catamaran, where we were greeted with sparkling Portuguese wine and a selection of local appetizers. The boat, accommodating a maximum of 17 passengers, felt intimate and exclusive, perfect for a family outing. My kids were immediately captivated by the idea of spotting dolphins and whales in their natural habitat, and I was thrilled to see their excitement.

The crew, Maggie and Sheila, were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly engaging with the children, sharing fascinating facts about marine life and the importance of conservation. As we set sail from the Marina of Funchal, the anticipation was palpable. The kids were armed with binoculars, ready to spot the first sign of a dorsal fin breaking the water’s surface.

A Dance with Dolphins

Our journey took us along the stunning coastline, with the majestic Cabo Girão cliffs as our backdrop. The crew explained that spotters on the island were in constant communication with the captain, Nico, to guide us to the best locations for sightings. It wasn’t long before we received word of a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins nearby.

The excitement on board was electric as we approached the area. The dolphins were playful, leaping and diving around the boat, much to the delight of my children. It was a magical moment, watching these intelligent creatures in their natural environment, free and unrestrained. The kids were mesmerized, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for the experience.

The crew ensured that we maintained a respectful distance, allowing the dolphins to approach us on their terms. It was heartwarming to see the dolphins interacting with a sea turtle, a rare and beautiful sight that left a lasting impression on all of us.

Giants of the Sea

Just as we thought the day couldn’t get any better, we received news of a Sperm Whale sighting. The captain skillfully navigated the catamaran to the location, where we joined other boats, all maintaining a respectful distance. The sight of the whale, a true giant of the sea, was breathtaking. My children were wide-eyed with wonder, and I knew this was a moment they would cherish forever.

As we made our way back towards the marina, we were treated to yet another whale sighting, this time even closer. It was a rare opportunity, especially at the end of the whale-watching season, and we felt incredibly fortunate.

The VipDolphins Experience was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip to Madeira. It was a perfect blend of luxury, adventure, and education, offering a unique perspective on the beauty and majesty of marine life.
